Which is the best variation of the evil twin amp you guys recon is the best?

The brand new ones or the 94 ones. I plan to swap a my 65 twin reverb RI for one simply because of the overdrive, the 1/4 switch and effects loop so i can use it with my Fender Satellite.

Although, I have never played the red knob Twin, I have a '94 Twin (PR266) which is the evil twin that came out post-red knob twin and before the Pro Tube Twin. I've owned this amp several times and have liked it for it's versatility, but ultimately have sold it because of its weight. I'm in the process of selling/trading it right now. Tired of hurting my back!

Here's my two cents on it: The gain boost on the clean channel is wonderful but not well implemented - it could use a wider range of boost (i.e. it has to be at 8-10 for any crunch). If you're cranking the amp or running it on low power with 2 power tubes pulled, it is much better. The high/low power switch is again, a great idea, but even on low power, the amp is mega loud and the people in the next zip code will hear you. It's ridiculous to try using it in your typical bar w/o an attenuator.

Then there's the OD channel.....it has a nice range of distortion but the EQ is voiced wrong. I've never have been able to dial in a lower gain blues OD nor a higher gain Boogie type (MKI Santana Boogie NOT a Recto Boogie ) sound. The EQ either mushes out or gets spikey. The stock speakers don't help the OD sound much either.

OK, now that I've critiqued it, here's what I like about the amp: Clean channel is 100% classic Fender along with the reverb (which is overkill past 3). The EFX loop has good flexibility and the front knob which controls the mix is a nice feature. Footswitchable gain voicing on all channels is a plus. Good reliability vs. some of the newer Fender stuff.

If I had to do it again, I would seriously consider tracking down a used Pro Tube Pro Reverb. It has a USABLE half/full power switch, the cleans are on par with the Twins, the OD is a bit more flexible tone wise and the EFX loop is footswitchable. In essence, it's a baby Twin. It also is a few pounds lighter to carry, but not by much. Another idea might be to check out the new Supersonic 22. This is what I plan to replace my Twin with.
Good luck!

Matt

Hey, i had a go on one today but it had two inputs rather than one. Cant remember which that is but the quarter power switch was like, not existant (Except cut some of the high end right off).

Also the clean channel was nowhere near the clean on my 65 twin reverb.

I need an insanely clean combo amp that can do quiet, and effects loop. Overdrive would be a bonus.

Sounds like you played the Twin Amp that I have. Outside of what you have now (i.e. the 65 RI Twin), I doubt that you are going to get any "cleaner" other than maybe an old Dual Showman Reverb head, but it won't have an EFX loop. I don't know if the silver-face Twin Reverbs are any cleaner than the RIs (my '81 silver face was ridiculously clean and LOUD). Good luck with your quest!

IM actually looking at a vibroverb, the early 90s brownface ones that buckley used. However it seems quite impossible to find one here in the UK so im might try a Custom Vibrolux reverb and do that headroom mod upon it to make it closer to a vibroverb.

Otherwise i might start looking non fender... Mesa and rivera are probably my next stop
