Oh a horrible hum. Nothing plugged in. all knobs down. with power on and take off stand by, she just hums. and the hum seems to get louder as she sits

So right when we were going onstage to play Fort Reno concert series in DC, The cloud burst open and drenched every thing. Saved guitars first, but my fairly new hot rod deluxe was next in line to be covered, which I am so sorry about. I covered her within a few minutes, but the rain was beyond torrential. Thought I have seen worse in my day with wetness on amps, but this one really effected my sweet deluxe.

Although she cleaned up really well. I opened the back, dried everything and do not see water anymore. The amp just hums a horribly like a pehistoric humming bird. Little crackle, but mostly hum and the larger tubes turn a cool cobalt blue.

Concert went on and I borrowed an amp from the headliner. As we went on first, he says I saved his amp.

Don't really know how to go about this and I am worried that a repair shop will trouble shoot until I am close to the cost of a new amp. Thoughts?

all the best

Hi ColorSchool,

Did you turn the amp upside down to make sure all of the water is out of the effects loop jacks? Blow them out real well. Could be a problem in the loop circuit, preamp out, power amp in. Sounds like the tubes are pushed beyond wide open, blue tubes huh? Not good.

Moisture in tube sockets maybe! Get a can of computer dust off and hose it good!

Good idea Cap47, lots of niches that could hold water in the amp.

That gave me another idea too. I wasn't clear if the amp was plugged in and turned on when it started raining. If it was on during the rain, the output tubes could have cracked and let air in, which could cause the blue glow. If nothing inside the amp looked burnt, and there is no water in the loop jacks, it could just need new output tubes. I would try an old set first though, in case it's more than just the tubes. The loop jacks, input jacks and the foot pedal jack, are covered by a plastic box inside and can hold water.

Thanks all.
Yes the amp was off but plugged in when the deluge came down.
I put the amp on its backside overnight on a dry suface after drying as much as I could with a towel.

Tubes do not pull out as easy as I thugh they might. Looking for a release or something. How come I do not see replacement tubes on the site?

thanks

The blue glow has nothing to do with a crack in them! You have to release the spring retainers by pushing them down while pulling the power tubes. I always grab the power tubes by the base and not the glass when pulling. Keeps you from loosening the seal around the glass. Wiggle and pull in a circular motion!

Oh man ! Been there, an October star party in Illinois(rain then sleet) in the middle of a set. We had minor coverage, but that stuff was blown' right in on us and the equipment. Guess we thought we had Kryptonite in our pockets, so we played on for 10 to 15 minutes. Anyway, when I got home I pulled the tubes and chassis, and went over it with a hand-held hair dryer. Did the same for the PA. That worked out fine. But since it's Summer, I'd go for the hair dryer and leave the chassis in an air conditioned enviornment for a week or so. Not sure about the blue ionization in the power tubes. Art

+1
http://thetubestore.com/blueglow.html#blueglow

I've had tubes glow blue for decades with no problem.
In most cases it's no problem unless it's a blueish violet glow around one element in the tube. That could be an air leak. For the most part if your tubes glow blue it's not a bad thing at all so don't panic.

oooooohhhhh the blue haze.....mmmmmmmm :D I like to watch the colors change when I play sometimes. 8)
I usually carry a USGI poncho in the Jeep,it would be a good idea to have one handy for outside gigs, lighter than a tarp, and folds down to pack nicely.
I hope you get the amp working soon and nothing is a major problem. :D

I'd remove the chassis completely from the cabinet to let it dry.

Thanks Guys. I ended up taking it to a Fender shop today that only does AMP repair. The more I took your all's advice and tried things, the more it seemed like something was going to be done to tubes or air leaks.

They won't even be able to look at it for a week though. So i guess I have to go source a second amp for gigs in the meantime.

Worse case scenario. Is the amp section for sale as a part, since the whole amp section can be fairly easily removed? I worry that these types of issues never truly go away once they rear their ugly head.

will keep you posted.

Thanks

If the amp winds up a lot of coin to fix, I'd send it to TJ for a conversion.

http://www.tjadamowicz.com/amps/process.html

He'll use the trannies and some other stuff to build you a really sweet hand built amp for not a ton of cash. TJ's a great guy and a serious craftsman.
