I just looked inside mine, and the 6in. seems to be the max size you can get into there. you are going to have to run an external cabinet with the larger speaker. 8)

You might have some adjustments to make to get the 8 inch speaker in there. The tube and transformer can be in the way.

http://akavalve.blogspot.com/2009/07/how-to-fit-weber-alnico-speaker-in.html

I think that the alnico magnet speakers won't clear the output tube if you use the existing speaker mounting baffle. The ceramic magnet speakers might clear the tube, but the back of the chassis and/or transformer might be in the way. Either way you will probably have to redo the speaker mounting baffle to get the 8 inch speaker in.

The Weber 8 inch ceramic sig 8, MIGHT clear the tube, check the listed depth and measure your existing speaker depth. Looks like about 2-3/4 inch depth to the tube from the baffle on mine (this is hard to measure, but it's close). Still, the transformer and chassis might be in the way anyway.

Thanks Y'all

I guess I will build a new cabinet for the champ and perhaps do a bit of mods in the tone control dept.

Wood selection will be the fun part. as well as dovetailing the joints.

I was all set to go cash crazy to mod my Champion 600 when common sense got in my way. I went to a gold pin JJ Tube from Eurotubes and replaced the heavy original speaker "suede" with Fender oxblood speaker cloth. Big change for small dollars.

That would be a fun project. I'd go for a 12" speaker. That little amp will really sing and take on a whole new character with a 12.

When it comes to the engineering I'm ????? however isn't there a maximum that the speaker could be , wouldn't a 12 inch be too big to push for that small wattage ??

Bear in mind I'm comparing my 600 Champ to my 1958-61 Magnatone Custom Classic 410, dialed in to a Custom Shop 2001 56 NOS sunburst maple neck SWEEET Strat.
That combo just sings, Fender really dialed it in on the NOS, I loaned the strat out to a friend for a few numbers last night @ NIC-A-Nee's to hear from a different perspective.. IT ROCKED !!

If anyone wants to hear what a Magnatone Tonemaster sounds like go to
Phil X @ frettedamericana web site..

The C600 sounds even louder, better, with more low-end, through a 12-inch speaker, very surprising. There are those who say that impedance matching is important in an amp, others that say it isn't. At worst, it's only an efficiency issue, which won't be a problem as long as the mismatch is within reason, such as going from 4-ohm to 8-ohm, or 8-ohm to 4-ohm. The stock speaker is 4-ohms, and it should also handle an 8-ohm speaker well. I wouldn't recommend 2-ohm. I say that if it sounds good, and the amp doesn't produce much more heat, an 8-ohm 12-inch speaker will be fine. I have tried my C600 plugged into an external 8-ohm, 12-inch speaker and it sounded great. I couldn't believe that all of that sound was from the little C600! At GC, I had them plug the C600 into and Egnator 12-inch, 16-ohm speaker, it sounded pretty good as well, but not as loud as the 8-ohm speaker I had used at home, so 16-ohm is maybe too much for the little amp. Of course it all depends on what brand of speaker is used, as to the way the amp handles it.

I've pushed two 1x12 cabs with 3 watt SS Pignose amp. Done the same thing with a 1 watt home made ss amp.As long as the impedance is correct, it really makes no difference.
