Hello all,

I just bought a Blues Deluxe Reissue amp. I absolutely love it!! However, I'm curious why the top panel is upside down when I'm facing the front/grill of the amp. I know it's not just my amp. I've noticed this on other fender amps of this type I've looked at as well. Could anyone tell me the reasoning behind this? It's a little annoying as I have to make my adjustments reading upside. I haven't read any reviews where this has been an issue.

Thanks!

I think that Fender's line of thinking was that players have their amp setups upstage. In those cases, the knob descriptions would be easily readable by the player.

With no definitive right/wrong regarding amp setups, there will always be one camp of players who will be unhappy.

Of more concern to me would be the inherent design flaws of the Fender Hot Rod series amps.

Good luck!

Thanks! I guess that makes sense. Being new to the Hot Rod series amps and to Fender amps in general, I'm curious about the "inherent design flaws" you mentioned. What are they so that I can be aware of them, and possibly troubleshoot them if or when the time comes. I appreciate the feedback.

Well, I'm no amp tech, that's for sure; but I'll be happy to share what I've learned in the forums:

The traces on the PCBs of the Hot Rod Series amps are a weak point and prone to fail over time. Also, the tubes hang directly from the PCB with no support, placing additional unneeded stress on the PCB.

You can read about these issues in more detail at Harmony Central. Simply click on Reviews > Guitar Amps > Fender > Hot Rod Deluxe. Scroll thru the reviews until you come to the ones with a low Sound or Reliability rating. There's lots of good info over there.

Good luck!

I've never heard of anybody standing behind their amp when playing.

I never heard of that either. I think it is a bad design.
On a separate point - When I get past 3 on either Volume or Master Volume I get a hiss. Is that normal for this amp?

I haven't had any hiss yet. I've very briefly had the volume and master around 4 and didn't experience any hiss. I was plugged directly into the amp (input 1) without any pedals and was using a humbucker equipped guitar and planet waves "rock" cable. My guitar volume was around 4 or 5. As inconvenient this upside down panel is, the tones I get from this amp makes up for it. I'm a hobbyist and don't play out...yet. So, I don't mess around with EQ much. Once I get a sound, I leave it until next time or I get bored. I knew this going into purchasing this amp.

Well, I use a Strat and have a bunch of pedals in a pedal board. I may try taking away the pedals and see what happens. But, they really help the tone. I may also be standing too close to the amo. We'll see.

I also tried my strat. I got buzzing, but no hiss. I think the buzzing is my guitar pickups and not the amp.

I just got the Fender Blues Deluxe Reissue myself and I love it thus far. I use gt-8 and haven't fully utilized gt8+FBDR potentials yet for sure.

So, do the FBDR have similar design issues like the Hot Rod? I looked at reviews at HC, before I bought it, and found no alarming issues with FBDR.

Thx.

I just got a Blues Deluxe less than a month ago, absolutly love the sound, haven't heard any hiss yet but I don't turn it up past 4 in my basement. I know what you mean about the display panel though, doesn't make much sense.

I don't know much about the engineering behind these amps. I'm learning as I go and this forum is helping. Below is a site and link for the Hot Rod Deluxe, etc., which also explains the difference between the Hot Rod and Blues Deluxe (not the reissue though). It's too technical for me to grasp right now. Maybe you've seen this. Hope it helps.

I had 2 responses regarding this issue (one here and one in the Vintage Forum). It seems as though back in the day that players would put the amp in front of them instead of behind them. Thus, the panel would be right reading. I don't think I was even born when this was happening! Like I wrote previously, the sound of this amp certainly makes up for it, etc.
