The RCA grey plates are great also like the guys mentioned,I usually play around and see what sounds best in the amps I have,I've also used the GE tubes,Brimars and the old JAN 6V6 tubes as far back as 1946 or so.
It can get expensive but as long as American made tubes are out there to be had,I'm going to use them...they're better sounding to my ears.

I think I might test the grayplate 60s RCAs tonight.
The test numbers advertised were very high.
The 6V6 is a GTA

I've used quite a few of those with very good results,I think you'll hear a difference.
Like they say tone is subjective,to me the greyplates are a little brighter, but I have a very hard time describing what I hear.

That's what I have generally heard about the grayplates vs. blackplates.
The blackplates have been described as smoother and creamier, and the grayplates have been described as bright, open and having lots of headroom.

For those hunting for good NOS tubes, this is a fairly good description of the brands and re-labels to look for on the market. BTW, one of my BF PR has CBS-Hytron 6V6GTY in it. These tubes have lasted a LONG time (like 10 years of fairly constant use). And sound pretty close to the gray glass RCA's (actually a bit stouter sounding, but maybe not the butter-like midrange). Just another option...

Thanks for posting, bimmerman -- that tone lizard tube page is awesome.

I know enough to keep myself out of trouble but that's a veritable font of priceless knowledge. Duly bookmarked!

Another tube blurb. For those looking for a really tough 5Y3GT type rectifer, I've used the Bendix 6106. It's a slow-warmup, mil spec (really made for missile use) tube. So if slow-warm works for your amp, it a consideration.

How many others have tried this tube?

Thanks!
