Ahoy Mateys!

Well, thought I'd ask old veterans, as we all know Fender Reverbs do not have distortion mode per se (without cranking it loud).

Probably many of you bought pedals for this mighty Amp to get more versatility out of it.

So any opinions on what you use/used and how well it worked, would be appreciated.

I've heard that Mesa Boogie V-Twin is a fantastic pre-amp/hybrid pedal that works best with clean amps, any experience?

Cheers ^^

For "just a little grunt" I favor the Fulltone OCD.

Whenever I need to drive one of my Twins into thermo-nuclear schizophrenia I use a Zoom amp simulator pedal. From there it's into a vintage A/DA flanger then a Radial Tonebone A/B/Y switcher, with both outputs routed to each channel or (on rare occasions) two separate amps.

HTH

Whoa there !!! My experience with the V-Twin, is that it can send a Twin Reverb into a frenzied state of propulsion. Be sure the launch pad is clear of small children and adults of normal hearing ability, without ear protection. Seriously, I'm not a pedal guy,but I had one of these for a while. Tried to use it with an old Twin Reverb in a blues band. Could hardly open it up ! These are wonderful Boogie pre amps ! And built like tanks ! Art

So in other words, Twin Reverb and V-Twin complemented each other well, you were getting crunch, fuzz, distorted sound at lower volume levels?
I would suspect that this would be the case, since they were apparently made for each other but I couldn't get info/videos of such combination and how well it sounded.
These Mesa V-Twins are really expensive (around $350) for used pedal since you cannot buy new ones anymore (they have been discontinued for years and are highly sought after).

Actually, it was way more than I could use, in that setting. But yeah, it would certainly overdrive the front end of the Twin at lower volumes and it was reasonably versatile. Like I said, I'm not one to use pedals, so I'd seek the advise of some of these other guys, like Ned, Arjay, Supro, or anyone here with more experience. Art

Check out the Electro Harmonix Big Muff Pi or the Marshall Guv'nor both are very versatile pedals with a broad tonal range and the new Pi has a toggle switch that engages a circuit that enhances the tone even more. The Guv'nor is like having a Plexi or JCM 800 in your signal chain.

I owned the V-Twin Rack for about 10 years and just sold it. Loved the tone and it punishes clean amps. Expensive.

Other great pedals for clean:

Paul Cochrane Timmy - more of your amp and guitar, from pushed to crunch and everywhere inbetween.

Barber Direct Drive - this is my crunch pedal and love what it does to the Bandmaster.

Fulltone OCD - great pedal. Don't own one, but other bandmember does and it does great things to the amp.

Keeley-modded Tube Screamer - OK, but now I have these other two I don't bother.

Fuzz - clean is what you want for fuzz; you don't get any cleaner than a twin. Try a Guyatone TZ2 The Fuzz, which is a close copy of the venerable Univox Super Fuzz. Or splurge and get the Z Vex Fuzz Factory.

Keeley Compressor - great in front of the overdrive pedals for smoothing them out and sustain for days.

Boss DS1 - hated it. Sounds like a jar of angry bees.

Oldie but goodie - MXR Distortion II; bought mine new in 1982 and still have it.

Enjoy! Pedals are like ice cream and you'll need to find your own favorite flavors.
