Hi, I play a Rickenbacker 360 through my Fender Twin Reverb Reissue, I like the beautiful clean tone and the reverb, the termolo, and of course the volume, but I don't like the sound of the speakers. They are Jensen C12-K's and I find them to be far to bassy (perhaps because of the hollow body of my guitar) and a bit brash when I turn up the treble, it almost becomes sharp and brittle (again perhaps a function of playing a rickenbacker, notoriously bright).

So, point being, what I want is some speakers that are perhaps a little less bassy, anyone have any suggestions? I wanted to get the 8ohm 100w Jensen Blackbirds, would they work? Also, should I replace the tubes? They are just stock. What are good brand tubes to use? Are the electro harmonix tubes any good?

Thanks

Also, would either Celestion Alnico Golds or Vintage 30s work? Any opinions on them? Thanks again.

If you are truly looking for the retro-clean sound from your twin, look for some pre-owned (used) JBL D-120 speakers. These were an upgrade on the older Fender Twin reverb. They were wonderfully clean but had a full range sound very controllable using the tone controls on the amp.

I know these are out of production but there are several sources that advertise NOS New Old Stock or used speakers. I see them from time to time on the auction sites.

Happy Hunting

Thanks I appreciate the explanation. Are any companies making any speakers that are comparable to those that are available in current production? I will keep an eye out for those ones. I wish I was getting more replies. Please help guys.

I would look at Weber speakers. They specialize in replacing Jensens and other classic speakers. Tung-Sol new production tubes are my favorite for preamps, winged "C" SED are my favorite for the power section.

The previous 2 posts were correct. I've been playing twins with JBLs for over 27 years. I've owned 5 or 6 in that time span & still have one with JBLs. The Webers you want that are a very good replacement for the JBLs are the California model. The ceramic model works fine, you do not need to have the higher priced Alinco California. Good Luck & Happy Playing.
