It's not quite time to re-tube yet, but this will be my first re-tubing with my Bassman. I have questions.
Are all these things fixed biased, or just certain ones? Mine is an older model, before the LTDs came out. Eminence speakers and SS rectifier.
I hope it's fixed bias. I know it's a simple process, but I'm very clumsy and fear electrocution. :!:
Also, could you offer some recommendations for clean, warm and affordable tubes?

JJ's, EH's, and Tung-Sol re-issues sound pretty good and are reasonably priced.

Stay away from the Groove Tubes (those should only be used in Frontman Amps!).

Do you know if Bassman Reissues are fixed bias or not?

Yeah, your Bassman is a fixed bias amp. But the bias should be checked by a tech when changing out the power tubes. If your amp has not been in for any basic maintenance in 5yrs or so, then this is the time to take care of both issues. The preventive maintenance and tube change should last you another five years. Yes...you should fear electrocution. I do and I work with electricity everyday and when I open an amp and poke inside the chassis,I'm real careful.
It is always a helpful reminder to all of us to be careful with the voltages inside amps and even when playing and wall outlets and grounding issues.

I know you didn't ask for that but it's a public safety announcement from your local power utillity employee......ME. :)

So just a power tube check every five years? I can live with that.

Since it's open backed, it looks like I can change tubes without pulling the amp out the chassis, correct? I know it seems rather obvious now, but I don't want anything unexpected to pop up when I get down to the nitty gritty.

I bought it used and it already had them in it. They don't seem too bad, but I guess there's always room for improvement. :D
