recently bought a hot rod deluxe and the past two times i've used it i ran into some trouble and i'm wondering if it's me or the amp.

quite a few practices and 3 gigs since i've bought it and i haven't had the thing turned up above 2... but the strat's always cranked between 7 and 10.

past two times i've used the amp, after about an hour or so it starts making a wierd whistling sound. if i shut it down for about 30 seconds and flick it back on it's fine...

wondering if i'm overheating it somehow? better to turn the guitar down and the amp up? better to run my pedal board direct rather than the loop? what am i doing wrong?

i traded my used vox because it was giving me trouble for a brand new HRD so i wouldn't have to worry about it... oh well...

If you are plugging an effects pedal directly into the "power amp in" on the amp, the effect MUST have a volume control or you can get an uncontrollable "howl" or loud whistling noise from the amp. You may be right on the edge of this happening by keeping your volume at only two.

Try moving the effects pedal to the input jack of the amp and see if the problem goes away. With it hooked up this way, try playing with the volume turned up to at least four and see if the problem is still there. Try this and get back to us with the results. :)

+1

The power-amp out / pre-amp in jacks are not a buffered effects loop a la the "Evil Twin" or the Pro Sonic.

Stompboxes work best with this amp when used with the conventional input jack.

thanx guyz!
i'll give that a try... but i have another question concerning the stompers:
where in the chain do i put the boss tu2 tuner?
right now i'm running a dod flashback fuzz-digitech screamin' blues od/distortion-cry baby-ibanez de7 delay/echo in the loop, and the guitar and tuner into the input.
when i stick the tuna in the chain it messes things up.

Do any of your effects pedals have a "tuner out" jack?

If so, use it.

If you don't have the tuner out on your effects, the "preamp out" on the amp works just fine, no effect on tone. I just tried it on mine to make sure. :)

Makes sense (since there's no modulation or delay effects).

Good call, shimmilou!

so... i think what im hearing is - leave the tuner out of the effects chain and run a separate line from [pre amp out] to the tuner?... makes sense to me.
thanks for using your's as the proverbial guinea pig shimmilou.

many thanks to all.

Big 10-4! I have had my HRDlx for over ten years. I still have the original tubes in it and it still sounds great to me. It was my main amp, I used to lug it around for jamming until my knees told me to get a lighter amp. I used a DOD VGS50 for years, plugged into the input jack. I tried the pedal once into the "loop" with the volume on the pedal all the way up and got that horrible howl. Never tried that again! Now I mostly play the guitar plugged directly into the input jack with no effects and play clean. I used to want effects with everything that I played, so I could "rock out", but now I prefer to play clean for blues so I skip the effects. When I want some effects, I use a POD XT which has just about any effect you might want, into the input jack. It seems that almost all effects, or anything in the signal path, adds some hiss to the input signal or takes away from the tone. I discovered a whole new world of overtones, harmonics and a more pleasing tone by playing clean. Playing clean also seems to reduce the strain on my ears. Enjoy!

most of the time i like it clean with just the delay... i've been playing guitar since the '70's, but i've only been doing lead for a little over a year... my array of effects helps to mask the fact that i ain't that good

but, i totally agree... nothing like the sound of a fender through a fender.
