yeah to get that nice break up you gonna need to turn up the vol to around 6 or so... at lower volume you can turn down the master and turn up vol but it won't sound as nice IMO, a tube screamer is always the better option for me.

Well I guess that settles it. Since an overdrive pedal is less costly than being evicted, I'll go for the pedal

So when I get a pedal hooked up, should I be keeping the Master up high and Volume down low like I have now?

Wish I had a house of my own instead. Freakin neighbors lol

may i suggest a fulltone OCD? dude that pedal has the best OD tone ive ever heard in a pedal and is 100% controlable by the volume knob on the guitar. the pedals gives you a sweet light boost all the way to a kick you in the ballz punch. try one your gonna love it.

yeah definitely get one if you dont have one already... I prefer to start with a clean tone and use the tube screamer if I can't get the break up I'm looking for from the amp, works best for me, but go ahead and experiment :)

I remember the days of playing in apts, not fun at all!

+1 on being dialed in clean with an OD pedal. it gives me the option by stepping on the pedal between clean and OD without having to dial it on the BJ.

i have a hard time getting a good smooth tone with humbuckers thru the Jr. it's always a hairy sound, and i'm ujsing alnico 2 pups. not very strong for HB's. it sounds as if the front end is being overloaded though, its weird. why im confused is because the pup's are only rated at like 7-8 k, while strat coils are usually like 6k-ish. but man, those HB's just seem to overwhelm the amp.

anyone else experience this?

i have to stay close to my strat partly due to this. i tried sccoping mids with an eq pedal to try and tame the guitar output, but it thins out the tone if you scoop significantly enough. the best solution is to just crank the power amp, and keep the guitar volume away from 10. however its harder than it sounds, that still doesnt work wonders.

i prefer strats anyway, but id like to be able to make use of my les paul when im out. i cant really use it for driven tones because of this, mainly clean stuff, which is kinda like playing a marshall stack at a coffee house for folk music. it just should not be. lol

Well I should have a TS-9 tube screamer (with Brown mod) in a few days. :D The brown mod is supposed to give a smoother less harsh tube screamer sound with a little added crunch.

Any settings for the tube screamer you suggest paired with a 335?

Too much cool stuff, now I got to start playing more often!

I try changing the tubes. The EL 84's IMO have no business in a Fender amp but that's a different story.
I'd get rid of Sovtek's for sure and dump the EL84's. Probably GT's. I'd retube it with JJ's if it were mine and have the bias checked. If it's running too hot the breakup will get pretty nasty with Buckers.

Congrats! I'm not familiar with the Brown mod. From what I remember I used to keep all 3 knobs half way, most of the time end up turning down drive, really depends on how I have the amp setup, if it's turned up enough I don't even use the pedal. You just gotta find that balance, I'm always playing with tone and vol on the guitar itself, if I still don't like what I'm hearing I'll reach down and adjust the pedal.

good advice cedar. so often folks overlook the V and T knobs and go straight for the stomp box's

Put a 5751 in V-1. It takes off just enough bite and gives a nice bluesy tone to the amp.

=1 I did the same thing to my Egnater. I used a NOS JAN Phillips 5751 and it lowered the gain just enough. It's a really quiet tube too.
