The time has come to retube and i am getting different answers regarding the phase inverter tube. I was under the impression that this had to be a balanced tube, however i am being told by my local tube and music stores that it is not necessary. If i could get some input on this that would be great.

Stock it comes with 3 crappy unbalanced Groove Tubes (sovtek) 12ax7 's.

I'd recommend getting a full re-tube set of JJ's from eurotubes HRD retube kits.

Looks like all their kits come with 1 balanced tube for the phase inverter.

You want a Matched Pair of 6L6's.

You want 3 12AX7's. ONE of the 12AX7's needs to be Balanced for V3 (phase inverter)

Eurotubes is great to deal with. So is boiaudioworks out of San Fran, they really know tubes. Both I have found are great. But anywhere is cool if they have WHAT u need....hah

What is the outcome if you dont use a balanced 12AX7 for the phase inverter as i have a few JJ's already that are not balanced.

well I was always told to - BUT it seems as though it won't hurt on most amps if u don't.

I have always had fun plugin' in different preamp tubes. I have though always used a balanced tube for the phase inverter.

I did find this:
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A PERFECTLY BALANCED PHASE INVERTER!!!

You could match the sections of a dual-triode, match the caps and resistors in the circuit, and all will still be imperfect. But, my friends, guitar amps are NOT hi-fi amps, nor do we want them to be. They are not about audio perfection, they are about tone, and the reality is that the inherent imbalance produced in the Phase Inverter results in more harmonic complexity, resulting in a more sonically pleasing end result. Remove the imperfections, and you sterilize the amp. You know, sometimes even people seem a lot more real with a few wrinkles on their face!

Now, go in peace. Tonight, you amp junkies can sleep, knowing that, together, we have solved one of the great mysteries of life!!!
