Hi everyone, I just put a used 1991 vibro king amp on layaway. I think it sounds great and the price was right at $1500. I was just curious on anyones experience with this amp model, good or bad. Its 60 watt, tube, and hand wired with 3 ten inch jensen speakers, and a blond tolex covering. thanks, dutch.

The P10R import Jensens are a big disappointment IMO.

A triad of alnico Webers will be a demonstrable improvement to any VK.

Pros - great clean tone, monster balls, monster chime, woman tone out the wazoo, arguably the best amp Fender has built in the last 20 years.

Cons - speakers are not up to the level of the rest of the amp, big and heavy, expensive.

thanks for the input, I'll see how the speakers sound, once its paid off. I can't wait to try it out at a gig. Worst case, I'll change out the speakers. :)

Aside from JBL's, the last OEM Fender speakers I ever actually liked were the CTS alnico tens that came in my then-new 1967 Super Reverb. In fact, those are precisely the speakers I'd select today if I owned a Vibro King.

Great amp, for sure ! I'd go along with the guys on the speakers, if they are still OEM. There was one issue with the early VK amps. This concerns the circuit around the EL84 that powers the reverb unit. Apparently, the original design ran the tube above specs(too hot) and folks were having a problem keeping them from blowing. I believe Fender published a service bulletin to fix the problem. If your amp has a 6V6 reverb power tube, then it is of no concern. Art

I think the Vibro King's reverb driver tube is a 6V6GT, Art. I know it is in the stand-alone re-issue 6G15 reverb tank (a 6K6GB in the originals).

I played out with the Vibro-King at our last gig. Love it, awesome tone. I can't help but wonder how much better this amp could sound with different speakers. You guys have my curiousity going. I play Blues and Classic Rock, Stones, Bad Co., Allman Bros., Cream, SRV type music. Anymore suggestions on speakers that would compliment this style of music? Thanks again, Dutch.

1991? It wasn't introduced until 1993, right?

Yes. I guess that one slipped past us. Not common on this site. Thanks for catching it. Still a great pro grade amp though.
