It really depends on what type of music you want to play. I changed the speaker in my Hot Rod Deluxe to an Eminence Texas Heat because I wanted that texas blues sound and it fit the bill perfectly. The Eminence website has sound clips for each speaker so I suggest checking those out and find one that suits your needs.

I'm a Weber fan,I put their speakers in all my amps, they have a good vintage vibe.
Check out Weber VST,that's their site and they describe all the espeakers.

I put a Celestion Gold in my BDR and it sounds great as well. I won't go back to the stock, ever.

A V30 will yield a more "modern/british" tone which, if that's your musical preference, would be good thing. A Weber, especially an alnico version, will give you a more vintage-based vibe. The newer ceramic Eminence speakers, such as the Swamp Thang, will deliver a compromise somewhere between the two. If you favor strictly blues, I'd recommend the hemp-cone alnico Tone Tubby (they are pricey though).

Best of luck, HTH

For the longest time we agonized over swapping out the speakers in our BD's, we still have 2 of them.

The main choices floated between the Eminence Swamp Thang and the CANNABIS REX.
We suspect it would really improve the amps sound but shelved that project after deciding not to put more cash into the hotrod amps. At least for a while.

We are in the planning stage of making two extension cabs and using V30's as the drivers.
Extension cab's can jack into many amp and not lock the new speaker purchases to a single amp.
Our current dilemma is 1 or 2 speakers in the cabs. :D
Something for the fall when we get back from all the August weddings.

Sum up all the suggestions so far are good, you have to find some way to listen to the speakers in person to decide on the actual sound you want!
Listening to samples over the web is a tough way to decide on what something really sounds like :!:

I agree with Pete. You really have to listen as you play to know what you like. I had used Celestion gold's in my Vox and really liked it. Since I was downsizing from a 4X12 to 2X12 (way too loud) I have extra golds so I put one in the BDR shortly after I bought the BDR and it was a huge improvement. A nice creamy sound clean (an alnico trademark) and is killer for a slight crunch using a tubescreamer.

I also use G12H's in my Marshall and they sound great in that amp, but it is a very different sound to the alnico's. I have always wanted to try a V30, but never have been able to get my hands on one to try it out.

Bear in mind that both the Blues Dlx and the HRDlx require 8Ω loads to be used with the extension speaker jack.

The Eminence speakers can be routinely found in both 8Ω and 16Ω versions -- thus if a 2 x 12 extension cab is preferred you'll be able to get the correct driver(s) to accommodate the amp.

Webers are also available in both impedances but 16Ω Celestions are less common.

I only found out about the Tone Tubby speakers a couple of months ago,and I've wondered how good they really do sound in person.
Since I prefer to play blues,it's tempting to try one in a Deluxe Reverb, especially after Arjay's comment.

I've never owned a Tone Tubby but I have heard them extensively in Deluxes before (both 5E3's and AB763's) and a Victoria Amps 5F8 small-box Twin clone. They sound fabulous, especially so after a proper break-in period.

If the "sticker shock" for these speakers does not kill you, your tone will live forever.

I might have to bite the bullet,I just glanced at the prices one time and it seems they were around $300!
But if you say they sound fabulous...well,that's temptation. 8)

Well as we all know, speaker tone is a highly subjective thing. I'd recommend you find somebody locally who has a Tonetubby and give it a critical listen before you lay your Mastercard on the counter. I don't want some "shiner" from the hills around Soddy Daisy coming after me with an Ithaca 37 loaded with double-00 because he spent three hundred bucks on a speaker I recommended then decided that it sucked eggs......

Ha, I knew it!

Just be sure to audition that speaker before you "hire" it.
