I ordered a Frontman 65R and it arrived today, new in a Fender box. I unpacked it smelled so strongly it took my breath away. I noticed on the back that the amp is constructed of MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard), I'm guessing that the MDF is gassing out. Is it normal for the amp to smell like that coming out of the box? I've never smelled anything like it in a music shop before. Any tips on a way to air it out quickly?

On another note, I was able to play it a bit and I was really impressed by the sound. I ended up cranking the gain up to 10 and I love the way you can control the tone with the mid contour. I used to have a Frontman 25R and although the amp sounded great clean, the distortion channel left a little to be desired in my opinion... not so with the 65R. I'm really digging it... except for the formaldehyde smell... :)

I have a Frontman 212r and it had the same smell out of the box. However it went away fairly quickly and don't notice anything now. Great amp though.

Is it made in China? I have noticed that smell before, maybe on things from China, don't know what it is, but it stinks and it does fade after awhile.

It might be that same chemical compound found in recently imported sheetrock from the PRC that made all those homeowners ill in Florida and rendered their homes uninhabitable. There's a class-action suit ongoing -- I think Dewey, Fleecem & Howe are representing the plantiffs......

It's probably just off gassing of the MDF and the glue for the covering. I noticed you don't see Tolex anymore for the covering. It looks like Fender has black textured vinyl covering now instead. Could be whatever they use to glue it to the MDF. I guess it will eventually go away without goiving you some sort of disease. :?

Thanks for the advice/info. I put it out in the garage last night and it seems like the smell is a little weaker today. I'll let it air out when I'm not using it and maybe hang an air freshener on the Reverb knob.

Hey BrownPanick,

That gave me an idea. There are a lot of different smells to air fresheners, like "New Car Smell". Are there any air fresheners with a "New Amp Smell"? There could be different amp smells, even the ones that smell bad, some people might like it. Maybe you could patent the smell!

They're one and the same, Supro.

I read that in "Tumors For Dummies".

Makes you wonder about the glue. I grew up with guys that could tell you what brand the glue was just from the smell, Testors, Wellwood... LOL You never smoked around those guys.

You can probably get away with anything in Mexico and China.

I'd patent the smell, but then I'd be held liable and have to pay thousands of people $1.38 each when they develop tear duct cancer and nail me in a class action law suit.

just drop one of those silica packs from shoe boxes (or guitar cases, for that matter) in the back and it'll be gone in a few days. Same thing happened with my Frontman 25R.
