What is the springy thing that "supports" the EL84 tubes in the blues jrs.
Is this necessary or should it be removed?
Should it be discarded or kept?

It's necessary. Leave it be. It helps keep the the tubes in place.

I had a tube break/crack and blown fuse, I don't know why the tube broke/cracked the amp just fizzled out while I was playing (no sudden impact or anything). I replaced the set and was wondering if the crudish "support" mechanism had anything to do with the break/failure. I would like to make my tubes last as long as possible sooo...

As this amp rarely moves from its spot I am leaving springy support off for now to "see what happens". I will check often for any slippage, but since they're in there fairly tight I don't see it being an issue.

Hey tjg8675,

You might want to address the bias problem that the Blues Junior has. Your tubes just may be cooking, because the bias is usually set way too hot from the factory. I have a trim pot ordered for mine so I can set the bias lower. If you have one tube go out, it may be a good idea to change both so that you have a matched pair. It could be just a coincidence and just a bad tube, but a cracked tube without any impact could be from heat also. How long did your tubes last before the failure?
