Hi guys,
I have a blues jr tolex amp and I have been trying to nail some settings for a blues sound similar to SRV.
My guitars are an americal deluxe strat with texas specials pus
and an americal series strat with CS fat 50s pus.
I use a ts 9 and a zendrive 2 od pedal.
I have come to believe that most blues artists using a strat and fender amps have a standard basis on how to set their amps and then make variations to get their distinguishing sound.
e.g. high mid range and preamp and master tone levels to get the tubes distorting.

I have tried those and I do get something but not close enough.
I have also tried recommendations from utube posts on blues jr settings but still nothing,,
I have also tried these on a hot rod amp but couldn't get there.

To help you, here is a video of Philip Sayce whom I discovered last night and at some point in the video (4:00) he has exactly the sound I am looking for. (to me, the sound that you know it's a strat and a tube amp..)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TgXZ8pG8WQ

I think he uses a 60s strat but I believe there is this color in his sound that can be found in other strat players (SRV to name one) with different set ups and PUS.

Is there any standard on how to set a fender tube amp to get this kind of sound?
If I am too naive or my question is unclear, please ignore this thread.

All the best..

There are two web sites that you would likely enjoy. This guy loves his Blues Jr and SRV.They are Oldtonezone.com and Steviesnacks.com. Be prepared to tune to Eb.

Thanks bluespIecre, I have seen this guy.
It s the most helpfull info I ve come across.
Still, I m not sure I can get that tone.
Maybe because this guy has the NOS version of the amp (different speaker) and his guitars have customized PUs.
Or maybe I cannot play that loud in my dorm room and copy his settings exactly.

Is the Eb tuning so important in the overall sound?
I use heavy gauge too but have not felt the need to lower the pitch.

Anyway, I think I made some progress by pushing the master volume quite high and lowered the pre amp.
This way I got a more twangy sound with a slight distortion from the preamp.
Still though, if there are any recomendations plz let me know

Definitely tune your guitar down (1/2 step?) to E flat, put on heavier strings (at least 11's) and that will get you a lot closer to SRV's tone. I think that he played with his Strat tuned down, but he used 14's!. I only have one guitar tuned this way, with 11's and it is the only one that I can get a good SRV sound out of. It is actually a "Classic Series 70s" Strat and it came alive with the bigger strings and lower tuning. Just make sure to reset the intonation after heavier strings with lowered tuning. You'll love it!

Hi Catthan. I was on You Tube @ StevieSnacks today. If you search for "Essential Licks Slow Blues Trainer" he puts some settings up, ie: everything @ 12, Master @ 4, Reverb @ 0. I think like you said though it may have to do with his NOS BJ speaker and Pups, heavy strings and Eb tuning.I have a tolex BJ also and tried everything minus the strings and jammed along. Did'nt sound half bad.

Hi guys,
thanks for your replies.
So, I tuned one of my strats down, (the one with the Texas Specials).
It made some difference but not that much.
Then I started playing with the EQ.
I managed to get something good by having the preamp @ about 8, master >5, high mids, lower treble and even lower bass.
This was for the fat 50s strat with 10s on it.
The one with the TS and 11s sounds a bit darker..
It is not SRV but it is close to vintage strat sound.
Comparing to steviesnacks, I think this guy uses particularly brighter PUs.
And I read somewhere that the jensen speaker the BJ nos has is brighter than the tolex speaker.
I am not sure about that though. It is not too expensive so maybe I ll try it at some point.
I 'll also have a look at the video bluespIecre mentioned.
However, the music that these guys play requires slightly heavier picking.
I had a masterclass with a guy once that was explaining that single coils have a very unique response to heavy picking. This might be one of the reasons why SRV's sound was always recognizable although he used several amps for his recordings.
I practice jazz and I am not used to this style of picking and maybe this is one of the reasons why I cannot nail a 'vintage' sound.
But I ll keep trying and I ll post if I come up with anything.
Please post if you have more suggestions
All the best..
