I have the opportunity to get my hands on a new ish Deluxe VM. I ve played it and like the tone and effects on the amp. 75% of what i play is indoors, so volume could be an issue at 40w. But can attenuate it so no real concerns there. I currently have a Superchamp XD and wonder if its a worthy upgrade. I think it sounds much better than my Superchamp and alot of the voices i never use. Also, the effects on the Deluxe VM are more adjustable and better sounding, even though the number of built in effects are less than the Superchamp. Anyone had any experience of the Deluxe VM and what is the general concensus of this amp. Thanks all.

As you know they are both in the Vintage Modified collection. I think that while the Deluxe has a little more kick due to the 40W and 12" speaker, I'm not a great fan of the Deluxe VM. I've played a little thru one and I would probably hold out for a DRRI. It does depend on the type of music you play but I think a DRRI with pedals if you need them will do everything the VM will and with unbeatable tone. I'm not trying to knock the VM, I own a SCXD also as a practice amp, but unless you're getting a real great deal, I'd hold out for a DRRI.

+1

I looked a blonde-and-wheatstraw version over the last time I was at a GC and I cannot say I was terribly impressed. The output tranny looked to be about the size of the reverb choke in my original '65 Princeton Reverb. As well, the overdrive seemed "fizzy" and the digital effects less than stellar.

Arjay

+1 I'd hold out too. I wasn't impressed with the Deluxe VM or the Bandmaster VM. I was concerned about the construction too when the grill fell off the Bandmaster I tried. I got the hairy eyeball from the sales guy LOL and he made like I broke it. I also like Arjay, a little concerned about the output tranny being so small. It might be me, but I didn't think it sounded like any 40 watter I've ever owned. It was missing the oomph and ballzyness of other amps in the same wattage range. Fender isn't really known for being an effect manufacturer and I find them cheesy at best and the distortion is fizzy to me too. I often refer to them as the "vintage molested" series. Sorry, but they don't impress me. Flame suit on and activated.

The DRRI is an amp built to hold up to the rigors of gigging and well worth the price difference.

Ten years from now the VM series will have joined a distinguished roster of also-rans that were unceremoniously discontinued such as the 400PS, the Super Showman, the Zodiacs, and other "luminary" examples of not-quite-matured technology which failed to impress Fender's hard-core fans.

Meanwhile, they'll still be cranking out the DRRI's like proverbial hotcakes.

(now turtling up under Kevlar......)
