I've been checking into claims that the max wattage of the EL84 is 12 watts max dissapation. This doesn't appear to be true, the correct figure is 17 watts at 300 volts. If you run them at 70% you end up with 17*.7=12watts.It seems that fender got it right with the BLUES JR.
If you want to check the spec sheets for any tube go to datasheets.electron -tube.net/sheet63html,remember its class AB two tubes. :P

That's not totally true though. If you are using 2 EL84 long-tailed pairs then it will still be 100% dissapation.

Not really,I think the confusion is because tubes are designed for radios and audio recievers. They want clean undistorted sound, but guitar players love the sound of tubes pushed into the distortion region. If you check out the original tube manuals they show the el84 running clean until 12,once you exceed that you quickly ramp up.The best thing to do is decide what sound you want, jazz should be around 10watts for clean sound with lots of headroom, blues should be 11 and metal should be 12 for heavey distortion

Oh yeah I totally agree. I was just saying that there are some Class A amps with 2 EL84s biased at 100% plate disapation.
