Man it feels good! Been wanting one of these for awhile, found one in a pawn shop asking 500, Walked out with it including footswitch (the wrong one... but still fender) for $380. Great shape, little scuffed and one pot repaired and has original fender tubes. Sounds great and crunchy, but a little muffled and bassy even with the bass down and treble up. Is this normal for the Blues Devilles, or is a tube change in order? :D

Hey GLJazz,
That is a great deal that you got, and a great amp! I bought mine new, Hot-Rod series, paid a bit more, but I love it. Although I liked the amp stock, it did sound somewhat muddy and not as clear or tight as I thought it should. The tone stack can be improved. With a simple jumper soldered to the Mid pot, you can change the tone stack to get much better control of your tones. Connect the wiper of the mids pot to the side of the mids pot that connects to the bass pot. Check out the website below for more details, the site is for Blues Juniors, but the tone stack is the same on all of these series of amps. I have made the change to my Deville, Deluxe and Blues Junior and couldn't be more pleased with the results. Of course if C6 is in the way of the mid pot then you have to get to the underneath side of the circuit board on the Deville, so you have to remove the knobs, remove the nuts on the pot shaft and the nuts on the jacks to be able to pull the circuit board down far enough to clear the chassis to get to it. Just my 2 cents, if it is worth that much. ;)

Cool! Good to hear its normal, and even better its something i get to tweak  I'll give it a look, sounds pretty straightforward!

Lucked out and I should be able to slide in there without taking the whole board off, but Now i just need to resist diving in until i order a decent sized resistor to drain the Caps of doom

Thanks!

Yeah, I enjoy working on amps too. I'm glad that capacitor isn't in your way, it was for me on both the Deluxe and Deville. Make sure you test it after you solder on the jumper to make sure you put it on the correct side of the pot. When you turn the Bass, middle and treble all the way down, you should have no sound out. This lets you really scoop the sound if you want by getting rid of a lot of mids while increasing the bass and treble.

Just thought that also while you have the back off, you could probably do a better job of dressing the wiring than the way it came. I cut off all of the wire ties and twisted into pairs all of the wires from the trans former, and the high voltage wires, and the signal wires and put new wire ties on. It's pretty easy, just do 2 at a time. The only amp that I noticed less noise from redressing the wires was the Blues Jr., but it certainly didn't hurt the other amps. Enjoy!

If it ain't broke, you can probably still fix it.
