Hi guys
I am looking for a descent tube combo, but I am getting confused with the sheer number of options out there. I am looking for an amp for practice (home and band) which plays well out of the box and without the use of effects necessarily.

The guitars:
Fender Strat 62 RI
Gibson LP with Bare Knuckle pickups

Effects
Tube screamer TS808
Boss GT-10

Style/ influences:
Chili Peppers, SRV, Clapton, Hendrix, Black Crowes, Led Zep, Deep Purple, Muse

Requirements:
Weight - not more that 20Kg (45 (lbs)
Price new - not more than £800 ($ 1200)
2 foot-switcheable channels - clean and crunch
Reverb

Which Fender amp may tick the above "boxes"?

Many thanks in advance

If you wand a clean and crunch channel that is controlled by a footswitch you are really limiting your Fender experience. The better Fender amps dont have this feature.None of the vintage amps such as the 59 bassman , deluxe reverb ,etc. However if you are looking for a low budget amp , there are plenty to choose from.I would personally check out any of the vintage reissue amps and use a "footswitchable " drive of your choosing such as an OCD,TS-9,etc.

i know you want a tube amp but you should also play a Frontman 212R--great sound and weighs just 45# and has a ton of punch--i also have a twin reverb reissue and its great but weight almost 70#

65 Deluxe Reverb RI or the Super Reverb, Bassman RI.. the DRRI is 22 watts and has been a favorite for decades sounds great and is real portable. The SRRI and Bassman are in the 40-45 watt range, are larger, louder and heavier if you need more grunt. There is no channel switching of any of them.

Some people love the HRD series, I had nothing but trouble with mine as did a ton of other people. check other forums like www.thefenderforum.com and you'll see what I mean. They're not the most reliable amps in the Fender lineup and it's a shared EQ. Without a tube change, the drive channels pretty harsh right out of the box IMO.

Check out some of the Egnater stuff too. The Rebel 30's pretty nice and has all the features you want and is in your price range too. I have a Rebel 20 and it's one of the best amps I've owned in a long time.

You really need to try a bunch out, ask questions especially about reliability and build quality and trust your own ears.

The new Super-Sonic 22 watt sounds like it fits your requirements. I haven't tried one myself since they are so new, but the buzz they are creating here and on other guitar forums seem to indicate it will be a very cool amp.

I agree with 63supro to avoid the other channel switching Fender tube amp - the Hot Rod series of amps.

The deluxe reverb could be channel switching with an ABY switch .Add any drive pedal you want and you have it.That way you arent limited by the amps crunch sound.Doesnt have a shared EQ either.

+1 budglo has a good point there. Two real channels with separate EQ. The Reverb is great too.
You can have anything you want. The Egnater Rebel 30 has separate EQ also.

Yeah an ABY switch with a Deluxe Reverb is a good point, but hey Tremolo Arm you'll need to mod the amp if you want reverb and tremolo on the Normal Channel too. Otherwise when you switch from the Vibrato channel to Normal channel you'll lose those effects if you were using them at the momemt. And there really isn't much of a gain difference between the channels if you expect a "clean" channel and an "overdrive" channel, so at best you can only really differentiate them by setting the tone controls differently. Maybe a "dark" sound and a "bright" sound to switch between. Just something to keep in mind.

Forget Fender, just get a class5. Light, all them sounds you want, and uncomplicated. You won't have channel switching, but you will have a nice tight bottom end and a drive to die for.

To use an A/B/Y switch with a Deluxe Reverb (or any other vintage-style Fender reverb tube combo for that matter) the device must have a 180º phase shift mode to keep both signal chains in sync with one another. I use the Radial Tonebone which has this option and it's an excellent piece of gear.

If modding a DRRI to make the effects operable on both channels, a phase shift function on the A/B/Y switch will no longer be necessary.

Great amp but a tad to small for band practice, wouldn't you say?
And no reverb either...

Yes, the Super-Sonic 22 grabbed my interest, but it's not even released in the UK...

Well ok, go up to a bluesbreaker or even a DSL. Seriously I wouldn't look to Fender. They have a great reverb and a great clean sound. I haven't heard a fender drive sound thats 100% convincing yet, including the Bassman. The flabby bottom end is no good for any of the sounds you want.

Because of where you live, you'll get a hell of a lot more from Marshall, Laney or even Ashdown, for your money. Fender's amp prices are to be frank, extortionate on all but their budget range. For what really are one trick ponies. Your seriously limiting yourself to a small (5/10 watt) combo or a head unit only, with the weight restriction.

How about Cornford or Blackstar.
Cornford Roadhouse 30

Overpriced Blackstar amp
As I said before your really limiting yourself with the weight issue, neither of them fit the requirment.

Very disillusioned with all of em.

Do you get Egnater in the UK? I tried the SS 22 last night and IMO you ain't missing anything. My Rebel 20 sounds better and has more versatility. Just doesn't have reverb and it's single channel. The 30 is a dual channel with reverb on both channels, watts control, has a dandy tone stack and runs EL84 and 6V6 power tubes.

Get a Deluxe Reverb, either the Reissue or a silverface. It's the perfect gigging amp and takes pedals very well.

To complement your TS808, get a Paul Cochrane Timmy or a Fulltone OCD. With those two pedals, you now have clean, crunch, lead.

Enjoy.
