This may be a stupid question but im a lil ignorant when it comes to amps and electrical stuff. I turned on my amp at the begining of a recent gig and before i started playing noticed the red light was dimming wich freaked me out but i went for it and played through our set anyway. after about 30 minutes my amp just shut off. it turned out that i had knocked a wire lose on one of the speakers and i noticed the back of one magnet was REALLY hot and the other magnet DEAD cold. that was afew days ago. sense i have re connected the wire and today i had band practice for about an hour and my amp sounded and worked just like new. BUT i noticed after i turned off that once again only one magnet was hot and the other cold. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN!? i play with the distortion and mid contour button on. i dont use the "more drive" button. i also dont crank the volume up past six. i have another gig this week and am worried!!! HELP ME PLEASE!!!!

You may in fact have a dead speaker. Check the one that feels cold to the touch with a DVM and note the DCR on the meter's display. If the speaker is 8Ω the display should read somewhere between 6.0Ω and 8.5Ω. If you have 16Ω drivers the meter should show 14Ω to 16.5Ω. If instead it reads 1.0, that indicates an open coil. You'll need to replace that speaker or have it re-coned.

It's possible that an open voice coil on the one speaker caused the amp to shut down as a self-precautionary measure. Be sure to check your speaker lead-in wires for proper continuity as well -- the problem could also be as simple as a pinched or broken wire.

Best of luck, HTH

Arjay, good pointers but you might want to clarify "DVM" and "DCR" as
GUITARGANGSTER77 did say he was a little ignorant of electrical stuff.
He may not understand what you're referring to.

I am assuming you are suggesting that he use a Digital Volt Meter (DVR) and measure Direct Current Resistance (DCR).

I wouldn't waste a dime re-coning a chicom speaker.

Take a look at a pair of Celestion V30s or Eminence's Swamp Thangs. You'll find the best prices on Ebay.

You don't play with the band Guitar Gangsters do you?

If so get onto Asterix from Apoc Baby's, or Kingy from Grantham, I've a couple of old 12"'s you can have. I'll drop em round his house and you can sort it out with him when to get em.
