Definitley stay away for the HRD if you are looking for something in a small setting for sure. I would say that you should check out the Crate V15s. Crate sucks but somebody did something right with these little amps. They can sound pretty clean or Marshall big and can be had for $200 used. Put a warehouse speaker clone V30 in there for another $40 and they are a great bang for the buck.

I love it and own one but they are LOUD. You said for smaller situations so I wouldn't go that rout.

You could always just get a hot plate do get your volume down and still get the natural tone from the amp.

Otherwise I just picked up an Epi Valve Junior. It's a little 5 watt tube amp, but it has a good tone. I like it better than the new Fender Champ. It has a little hum problem, but there are simple mod instructions on the net to guide you through it.

a 5 watter is just too small. i think i am going to break down and get what i have always wanted, a super. i think i will put a 65 ri on lawayay and hay it modded to be aour 20 or 30 watts. i have always wanted on, so i think it is time to break down and do it!

I agree. You can't go wrong with a Super. Just remember that the impedence changes to half what was normal with you pull tubes.
