Hello all,

Until recently I was in a band with a practice studio where I was able to crank up my '65 Twin Reverb Reissue. Now that I don't have the studio I have had to bring my amp home to my 3rd story flat and I can't even have the volume of the TR a hair past zero without the neighbors complaining. I don't want to sell the amp because I'm sure that I will be in another band in the near future and I love the sound of my TR, but I don't want it taking up valuable floor space if it I can't play it either. Does anyone know of a way to bring the volume down while maintaining some of the tone that the TR is known for?

Thanks,

Grant

If you want to maintain the tone as best as possible get a THD hotplate. The volume box isn't the solution at all. You can make on easy enough if you want to give it a try though.

Thanks for the reply SratTone, but it appears that the Hot Plate doesn't work with combos--at least when I was viewing the product information on the Musician's Friend website it says that it is supposed to be placed betwen the amp and the cabnet.

Nah man combos are fine too. Just look at it like the speaker is the cabinet and the top part is the head. Works fine. Same thing.

the Hot Plate definitely does work with combos - I use it with my HR DeVille. All attenuators sit between the amp and the speakers. With your Twin Reverb (65 Reissue, I assume?), you need to get (I believe) an 8 Ohm (purple) Hot Plate, 2 short (e.g 3 ft.) speaker cables with 1/4" plugs, and a 1/4" female-to-female coupler.

Unplug the speaker plug from the TR's "Main Speaker." Run one of your new speaker cables from the Main Speaker jack to the Hot Plate's input jack. Then, if it will reach, connect the speaker cable to one of the Hot Plate's output jacks, and you're ready to rock n' roll at low volumes! (if you're speakers' cable is not long enough to reach the Hot Plate, connect another 1/4" speaker cable to the HP's output, stick a coupler on the other end of the cable, and plug the speakers' cable into the coupler.)

Hope this helps.

Thanks for all of the help guys! In case it hasn't been made apparent by my other two posts, I'm pretty clueless when it comes to electronics.

1) Pull the 2 inside 6L6 power tubes. This will decrease your power output down to the 40 watt range. 2) A 4ohm THD Hotplate set on -4db will also help you tame your TR. 3) Use a distortion Pedal.
Good Luck.

So I finally was able to get a 4ohm THD Hot Plate off of ebay for a reasonable price. I can't wait to be able to play through my TR again. So now I'm wondering if anyone can tell me what cables I should order? Jhuse said:

I just wanted to double check that that is what I will need and see if anyone reccomends any particular cable brands. Thanks again for all of the help!

It'll sound like garbage. 40 watts is still pretty loud. I had a Twin for over 30 years and tried almost everything to tame it. Try a Hot Plate. Twins are just loud, clean, heavy and incredible amps. I'd practice with a Champ or a headphone amp before you get evicted.
Good Luck.

I'm not quite understang what you're saying--are you saying that you've tried a hotplate and that it sounded like garbage? Or are you referring to the poster who said that removing a couple of the tubes will bring the volume down.

No, pulling the tubes wii sound like garbage. Mine sounded a lot louder than 40 watts when I tries it. It really wasn't a good tradeoff. You can try it yourself. Just pull the 2 inside 6l6's.

I'm not sure whether it would have had the same affect, but at one point I had a tube go out and it made the amp sound muddy and there was a lot of feedback when I used pedals. I don't think that I will bother trying to pull tubes as the Hot Plate is on its way. :D
