Ok, so I've been a serious guitarist going on 7 years, and in my opinion Fender amps are some of the best in the business, especially A Hotrod Deluxe combined with a Gibby LP Special. My bro used that set up, and it had some sweet tones, I can tell ya......

Needless to say, I DON"T have that set up. I play an ESP Viper-50, and a Frontman 212r. I've been able to get some killer sounds out of it though, and I really couldn't be happier...... Except about one thing...... Which brings me to my problem.

I've had the amp for about 2 years now, and I've been having one problem with the clean channel. One time I plugged a wah pedal into it, and the amp's frequency started to get shrill. Almost like breakup in the highs. The only solution I could figure was to plug my guitar into the active section, which took care of the problem, for the most part. But the active section (since it IS for active pickups) sounds a lot duller with my passive pickups. So I really can't get some of the bright snappy sounds I really love out of this amp with the annoyance of this shrill breakup-like sound.
Not to mention, when I plug the same wah in, it REALLY starts to break up. This really annoys me, because I don't want clean breakup..... I want a solid state, NO breakup amp sound. There are things I can do to get around this problem, but the solution severely cripple my sonic territory. (Such as not getting the clean tone I want, not being able to use a wah, etc...)

So, here is my question. Does this problem warrant a speaker change, or is there something I can do to fix this without spending some dough on a new speaker or two? Even though it's been almost 2 years, can Fender do something for me still? Should I take it to a shop and see what they can do? Or is this normal, and I'm just a whiner? (':?')

Any advice?

What I understand is your clean channel is not clean anymore ?

If yes, your amp need to be repair, tubes change or/and one or some bad resistors in the Phase Inverter circuit.

The Frontman 212r is a Solid State amp is it not?

It does sound like it needs repair on the clean channel circuit, and the shop is probably the best and safest place to have someone work on a Solid State circuit.

Another vote for taking the amp into the shop. Did you buy this amp new? Since you've had it only two years, repairs should be covered under warranty: http://www.fender.com/support/warranty/ ... R64CE3.pdf

This does not sound like a speaker problem at all. I would not reccommend trying to fix a solid state amp yourself unless you have the right equipment and know exactly what you are doing. It's not as simple as replacing a bad tube.

Good luck!

Yes, I bought it new.

I think I'll go with your opinions and take to in to a shop. I still have a feeling that this may have something or other to do with the speakers.... But I'll still be taking it in when i have the time and money.

Thanks for your input! You've all been a help. I've been looking for an answer to this question, but I just haven't been able to find somebody who has the same problem or a solution.

Hi John and welcome to the forum ! Just wondering if you could sub some other speakers for a test run. And I guess that you've tried your guitar, cables, and the wah pedal in another amp? If you've already done this, and the amp is at fault, then all you need is the time. Your warranty should cover any repairs, unless you dropped the amp off the back of a truck and it bounced into a swimming pool. Art

LMFAO!!!

You drop one of those particle-board amps off the back of a truck and bounce it into a swimming pool, you better call a priest to have him administer last rites. Then blow "Taps" over it.

In other words "Stick a fork in it, it's done!"

NO, actually I haven't had any other speakers to run this through. It's an idea though. Maybe I'll borrow a friend's speaker cab or something.
I feel a little stupid right now. I hadn't thought to try the wha with another amp....... Yup the wah was causing the problem when plugged in. Darn thing is pretty old. My brother bought it sometime in the mid 90's. I also admit, I don't have the greatest cables at the moment (Once again, my brother is the one with all the good stuff >_<) So, looks like I'll have to be getting a new wah, or see what I can do about mickey mousing this one.

Strangest thing....... When I haven't used the clean channel for a while through the first input.... The annoying high frequency buzzing goes away when I try it now... :?
I'm thinking that I may have damaged a speaker with that crappy wah pedal somehow, and the problem comes and goes. It used to make some pretty annoying sounds on certain notes. But now the problem is gone... Hmmm. Did it fix itself? LOL
If the problem comes back, I think I'll take it in to the shop. Crossing my fingers, cause I really don't want to have to deal with the warranty on this... I don't even remember where the paperwork is

I'm thinking about new speakers anyway..... I've heard some stories about the stock Fender loudspeakers blowing at high volumes, which is why I thought it might be a speaker problem.
Any thoughts on that?
