I tried a 22 at GC today and thought it sounded pretty good. I'm not sure there's really much different here in terms of tone. The chassis didn't say where it was made so I would say assembled here in the U.S. As far as Mexico assembly goes all U.S. and Mexican made amplifier cabinets are made in Mexico and that includes the reissues. The facility there is top notch and state of the art. I think there is a video tour of both the US and Mexico plants on YouTube.

True, but there are some pleasant exceptions.

Dumble and Mesa-Boogie come to mind.

I hear ya on that one. What I should have said was Fender.

Dumble and Mesa-Boogie didn't molest them .They took them out, wined them and dined them and came up with vast improvements. They didn't modify them for the sake of modifying them, there was a truly unique sonic purpose. Not just a way to make a quick buck. That's why Dumble's are so astronomically expensive today.

Indeed. The only all-new design of the FMIC era that really impressed me is the now-discontinued Prosonic series. It didn't precisely do a clean BF tone as well as I'd have liked but the cascading gain stages and selectable rectifier produced some nice overdriven sonic saturation.

Okay tried a 22 out at the GC tonight. It was just kind of okay. Not bad, not great, not a DRRI or really a Super sonic. Just didn't really ring my chimes, just kind of eh. Couldn't see where the amp was made and it was kind of tight where it was. I'm going back to see it a little closer when it's not real crowded. I brought my 72 Strat. The burn was too HRDlx sounding to me. The clean was decent, but not DRRI clean. The sales guy was worthless. I want to see how the tubes are mounted.

Hey Arjay I ask the sales guy about taking a peel inside, he said if I was buying it he would. My pet peeve a ribbon connectors. I hate them. As far as I'm concerned, they belong in computers, tv's and DVD players not guitar amps.

I'm with you, Supro. There are some ribbon connectors in the re-issues which seem to perform satisfactorily but it's nothing like the PTP construction you and I are comfortable (and familiar) with.

Not that you guys need a lesson on expectations, but did you really think you would like it ???

I have yet to buy ANY amp that didn't need a little tweeking.

Going in with the intent to dislike something leads to obvious results.

Looking back on the last year or so of comments kind of paints a picture of someone not happy with the current Fender productions.

I still have yet to plug in, hopefully i'll be completely subjective in my review.

I'm betting I'll own one at some point to really be able to open it up and see what its got.

A DRRI with a cascading gain second channel, capable of some pretty high gain, and an FX loop. That would be THE amp for me. Is this it? I don't know. I haven't played one yet, but I'm very interested. I know it's a Super Sonic and probably won't have the clean that the DRRI does, but I can hope... Anyways, Fender, that's my dream amp. You listening? :D

Ya think?

What I am happy with are all my real Fender amps. You know......the ones designed by none other than Leo himself.

I was hoping I was wrong and would like it. I'd be the first to admit it too. I love the old Fender gear, but the new Fender stuff just ain't cutting it for me. YMMV. Something is just missing with the gain in the 22. I spent a good hour with it. That's why I brought my own guitar with me. I wanted to give it a serious spin with something I'm familiar with. I just can't put my finger on it and apparently Fender can't either. Fenders never really been good with gain in general. There's a lot involved in a cascading gain amp for it to sound good, but it's really missing the mark. I'm not stuck in the past either, my Egnater's only 10 months old and very innovative.

I agree, never found anything Fender that sounds good in the gain territory.I love Fender amps because I really like the glassy cleans and the lush reverb. Its a great foundation for tone. The rest is accomplished with pedals of my choice.

I don't know......I thought the Prosonic and Supersonic were a decent start in the right direction. I have 2 Bogner Ecstasys, an original '82 JCM800, and have owned Soldanos and 5150s over the years, but I still bought a Super-Sonic. It's close, but the voicing was a little bit off. To me, a bit of comparative tweaking and listening on Fender's part should be able to mold that circuit into a truly excellent crunch and high gain tone. Thus, I'm hoping the newer SS versions are more on target.

I agree Arjay...I came full circle back to Leo's designs after starting with Tweed, and going the route of Peavey,Marshall,Mesa Boogie and who knows what, back to that simple BF DR and toneful bliss.

I had the original Super-Sonic combo (blonde) and for what it was , it sounded great !

Hi BB; I've read the specs on that one against the new 60W and I am hard pressed to see the advantages/disadvantages between the two. :? Anything to offer on that one. :?:

Same here, Reb.

I've owned Sunns, Kustoms, a Marshall Super Plexi Lead, even a Vox Supah Beetle.

I always ended up coming home to what I knew and liked the best......

FENDERS! All the way!

Man are you guys gonna RAZZ the bejeebers out of me about this !!!

I just picked up a classifieds special and Can't believe just how great the overdrive tone is on this thing !!! and for under 200 bucks too !!!

O.K. I'll let you in on the secret, its a danged old Peavey, yep a classic 50 2x12.

Man I'm telling you, this amp sounds pretty good !, its the 1990's version looks like a tweed twin, the original owner even took the big Peavey badge of the grill, so you have to look close to see what it is.

12AX7's and EL84's Go figure !

At least now you know who your dealing with LOL !!!!
