uhh.....back to the Supersonic 22....

The first batch of Supersonic 22 videos are posted on YouTube..
Check them out. Sounds like it has a stout bottom end and a sweet clean.

Have to try one in person. The clean seems typical, nothing new or different, the burn sounds just meh in the clips. Seems to lack top end all way round. The Gretsch, looked like a White Falcon, but I'm no Grestch expert but sounds nice. The Tele stuff lacked some sparkle and bite to me. As soon as I see one I'll try it. Got nothing to lose. The clips ain't doing it for me. Fender has a lot of stuff that sounds the same of better. They should just forget about the distortion stuff, it never sounds natural to me. Just my opinion.

I'm sure the clips do it no justice.

The Vids are well done, and convincing !

While it is not fair to compare a youtube video to the real thing,
I find that the Burn channel on the new 22w version (video) sounds almost identical to my 60 2006 version.

The clean has more beef as one of the clean vid has Treble on 6.5, and I keep mine on about 1.0 to remove the brightness.

Another amp classic was born with this new 22w super sonic version !

That's why I have to try one out. The vids are well done but to me the distortion sounds too much like my HRDlx did. And like I said, the cleans don't ring my chimes. Doesn't sound natural to me. I have a decent monitor system on my iMac. They sound like a towel is over the speaker. Everybody's ears are different though. So far it sounds like the rest of the newer Fender amps. Nothing new or different.

Really if you think about it, its a 65 DRRI plus a Super-Sonic at the same price as a DRRI.

HELLO !!!! how in the world can that be bad ?????

I wonder if the new SS is made here or in Mexico ?

Anyone at fender out there who can answer that one ?

I'm going to hold off on judgment until I can actually play one in person. I've tried the Super Sonic 60 and I thought the cleans were icepick-y and the burn was just ok.

And yeah, I don't trust those online videos. I recall the ones from the Super Sonic 60 and the videos made it look and sound incredible. In real life, the amp was a total letdown.

I also remember the guys at my local store telling me they had two Super Sonics that have been sold four times. Both amps were purchased and then subsequently returned and then eventually sold again. Reason given - the owners got it home and after a week of playing with it decided they didn't like it. At that price point ($1300 or $1400) I don't blame them. I think they'd gotten one of them back again because they had one on the salesfloor and they couldn't even give it away.

The Vintage 30 speaker in the original was a beast for sure !

A speaker change was absolutely needed.

Again hopefully somone gets to plug in and let us know.

The "new" speaker is no doubt a re-branded eminence of some kind, which should go a long way in resolving the "Ice pick" issue.

The original SS60s were ice-picky and I had to re-tube, bias, re-speaker, and install a beamblocker in mine to make it palatable. Looking forward to both new SS models, but I notice that they are still using a V30 in the 60 watt version.

One great thing I discovered is that inserting a Demeter Fat Control before the SS when using a Strat really brings it together. It fattens and smooths the tone into a frequency range that should have been present in the amp by default.

I too tried the beam blocker approach, I could not tell the difference ?

The ice pick still cut my head off if i was in front of the amp.

If it's built in Mexico using the same construction techniques as the HRD series it could be bad. Like I said I'll have to see one in person. I wasn't impressed with the videos. But that still doesn't mean it sounds bad.

The old SS's were made here in the states, have yet to hear the lowdown on the new 22 watt models.

I am told the 22 will be in this week at 2 local shops. If they get one, I'll report back. I'll check this afternoon. At least it has a Birch Ply cab and not pressboard.
It might be made here.

Hey supro, see if you can get them to "disembowel" one of those amps and shoot some pics of the exposed chassis. I'm curious as well.

Fat chance of that Arjay, but I'll give it a go. I'm usually a little biased when they start molesting vintage circuits. Usually no good comes from it.

True, but there are some pleasant exceptions.

Dumble and Mesa-Boogie come to mind.
