Hey,
Just picked up a used 4x10 tweed bassman wanna be. (not a fender but....)
it sounds decent, but gets real muddy at higher volumes.
the tubes were just replaced so i'm pretty sure it's the speakers.
its a 50 watt amp.

Looking to upgrade, but i dont have a huge budget.
Think im going to go with 2 Jensen reissue c10q's (I like these)
and 2 jensen mod 10-35 (never tried these, just curious)

Do I get 16 ohm speakers or 8 ohm?
Will I lose clean headroom with my choices?

This is my first time replacing speakers,I dont want to mess it up

Any thoughts?
Thanks

-VC

First off, you should confirm that the problem indeed lies with your speakers. Do you have another cab you can connect the amp to?

Second, take a look at the existing speakers for some impedance designation, or better still -- measure each one with a DVM (unplug the amp beforehand, disconnect each speaker and measure individually). Note how the speaker array is wired; series? parallel? series-parallel?

Finally, I personally have no love for any of the Jensen re-issues, ESPECIALLY the MOD series. I thing the Eminence Ragin' Cajuns are a better speaker or, if you prefer alnico, one of the Webers (perhaps the "Chicago" series).

Best of luck, HTH

Follow that Retroverbial said:

Check the amp first , and don't forget new tubes = need bias check= better sound= tube life extended

Forget Jensen, yes for Weber

Wats the name of the amp? Will be easier to help you

+1

Yunno, decades ago Jensen made a pretty good speaker. I can remember playing some of the old brownface and early blackface amps equipped with Vibrantos and the old "Concert Series" and no speaker ever sounded warmer or more articulate than the P12Qs and C15Ns. I'm not sure that the "new" Jensen company is even aware of how their original drivers sounded (or they are but just do not care). A shame, really......

Jensen is now made by Italian speaker company since many years.

Hi there Acarabba, If you can tell us which brand and model amp you're playing it would really help all the guys. As far as I know, none of of us have a problem with making any amp sound the best it can. I like Weber speakers for that old Jensen sound. Art
