Hi Gang,

I ran across a NOS Cyber Deluxe today at a music shop. It looks like an interesting scaled down version of a Cyber-Twin. The clerk is offering it to me for around $500.
I know these have been discontinued for some time now, and there are mixed reviews about them. The most common being that Fender didn't support it as well as they could have...
All of that aside, I spent about 30-40 minutes with the amp in the store and tried creating a tone of my own on the spot and it seemed pretty easy. I got a very nice tone with some sweet delay and reverb in no time, and even got a few comments for a couple of other customers about how cool that sounded.
So....the question is: Does this sound like a good price for an unsupported and discontinued model like this, or should I bargain a little harder with them?
I have a feeling they'd just like to see that one go away.

Thanks,

Harley 8)

I would be inclined to pass on it at that price seeing that it is unsupported.
Reminds me of Microsoft Windows 98 - microsoftie no longer supports it but it is what I am still using after watching ten years of op system changes. But... Microsoftie has a dirty trick up his sleeve, they decide to outdate IE 6 support and thus by means of newer browers requiring newer op systems they started a chain reaction affecting websites, so you the lowly know-nothing consumer will ultimately have to update your computer OS or buy whole new computer which comes with OS that don't support your favorite software you've been using.
(Guitar Center, Vox [and Youtube to lesser extent] forbids my from viewing
their websites. - brilliant, huh?)

There's got to be a good explanation why it is NOS and the clerk either isn't telling or doesn't know.
No doubt there are cool features and if it's like the cybertwin, you can download custom settings etc. however, there's that issue with microsoftie
again. Digital Amp Systems that are reliant on computer software to tap into their fullest potential is asking for trouble in my honest opinion.
That's not to say the amp isn't good without the computer, but if the puter connectability was a selling point, it's no wonder Fender may have given up on it.

Now, if it were a Bassman, or some other worthy amp, I'd say go for it.

Harley, this is the amp I was mentioning in your other thread about the CT. I own a Cyber Deluxe and it is a great amp which you will find your tone in. The 12" Celestion is outstanding and it's built like a tank. I bought mine a couple of years ago for $375 barely used, so I think you can beat that price if you look around. Check out the archived manual here on this site for the Cyber Deluxe and you can see all the tonal possibilites. I'm a blues player and kind of a tube snob but this amp really does a nice job. If you still want the Cyber Twin there is a nice one for sale at www.davesguitar.com for $495 which is a really good price. I've never been to their store but I've heard good things about them.

If it needs service, where will you get parts for a dis-continued, un-supported digital amp that never sold well in the 1st place?
At $500, they're looking for suckers.

Thanks for the replys folks,
@ Twinhit: I know all about microshaft and the concept behind it which is why I pirate all the OS software. Bill Gates wants me....DEAD! LMAO
I still use Windows 98SE, and I still browse with little difficulty, so that's no biggie.
As for why the amp is still there, I can answer that too. It's there because it's a "Programmable" guitar amp. That word scares a lot of guitar players in my area because they don't like to have to think about what they are doing.
I've been using programmable preamps since 1987 and this is second nature to me. I still use them to this day, and I get some really sweet tones, just like I did with this Cyber Deluxe in the store yesterday.

@88vette: I recall your reply in the other thread about this amp, which is one of the reasons I even looked at it. After the demo I did yesterday, I agree with you, the tones in there are awesome, especially for a solid state amp. There are a couple of reasons I'm seriously interested in this one: First, it's lower powered which would make it a good candidate for small clubs that the Cyber Twin would be too much for. Second, it has many of the same amp models that I have in the G-Decs that I own, specifically, the Dynatouch series, which I've been able to get some fantastic tones with. I still plan to get two Cyber Twin SE's, but I would prefer to get them new and have the full warranty on them, just in case anything went wrong due to manufacturer's error. I don't abuse my equipment, so with new gear, I would also know the complete history of the amps vs. taking a chance on used gear. That's a good price on the CT at Dave's Guitars, but how old is it, and why did it's owner get rid of it? People don't normally get rid of things that work reliably for them.

@ LesK: This amp is NOS which means that the 5 year warranty will apply to it. Even if Fender no longer makes this model, they are still obligated to honor the warranty that comes with it. In the event that there is a manufacturer's defect, the Fender Authorized repair facility, (Earcos) is only a 3 minute drive from my house.

As for computer connectivity, I really don't need it for any of my gear. I'm pretty good at creating and shaping tones and presets from scratch, which is usually how I do it.
As for shopping around to see if there are any others at a better price, I never knew this model even existed until I saw this one. I doubt if there are any others in the area. Besides, I've known the owner of this store since he first opened it in 1984, so I don't believe he is looking for a sucker. I do believe that he is only trying to offer this amp at a fair price to his customers as well as to himself, and I know he will stand behind everything he sells. So I'd be able to count on his full support should I need it. That's not a bad way to do business, especially if you want to stay in business.
I would rather do business with a guy like this than go to Guitar Center, or Sam Ash. Those places are the absolute worst when it comes to customer support.

A well stated post Harley. For a new amp you are correct he is not ripping you off at $500. The Cyber Deluxe new had a msrp of $1,000 and a street price of about $700. Also if it has the Cyber Foot Controller which was optional that would add even more to the amp. I believe it is the same unit used with the Cyber Twin. They sold new for around $250 and used for $100-150. Good luck on your decision. I love mine.

88vette,

That's very helpful, thank you. The fact that you like yours and still use it means that this amp doesn't just sound good in a music store. I believe I've found my new small-club gigging amp, and I'll probably pick it up this coming week.
They also offered me the Cyber Foot Controller for around $200, which is cool because I'll still be able to use that with the Cyber Twins when I get them. Of course, I'll have to download and use the Cyber Commender software when that happens......
After all, I don't want Johnny Stecchino to hunt me down and beat me like a red-headed step child for not using it

I'm glad you have a sense of humor about it Johnny.

But seriously, does Cyber Commander work with this amp too?

Unfortunately, Cyber Commander works only with the SE or the original CT. The reason is that the data words are different, different commands, protocols, and equipment IDs. Cyber Commander will not work with a Cyber Deluxe at all.

To develop Cyber Commander , i had to buy a few CTs and SEs (brand new) to test the software and ensure that the software worked on "all" SEs and CTs. Although quite similar, there are enough differences (like equipment ID and the "features") between the SE and CT that i had to create a CT and a SE version of the software. And you cannot mix'n'match the binary data files, although you can get away with mix'n'matching some of the text files. We had no help from Fender, so we struggled hard for a very long time, 2 years.

To develop Cyber Commander for the CD, I would have to do same as i did for the CT and SE. Unfortunately, the CD's are really hard to find, few built and sold. Pretty sure it wouldn't be worth the hard work and pain of doing it. So i never pursued developing the software. Maybe some other brave soul can give it a bash.

ciao,
johnny.

Johnny,

I understand what you mean. I've finally been able to answer a question that I posted in another thread a long time ago. The CD is very similar to the G-Dec with it's amp simulations, but seems to use some of the CT's tone stacks which is not available to the G-Dec.
I didn't realise that these amps were made in limited numbers which would make software like Cyber Commander an excersize in overkill. Kind of like setting up a mod shop for the Fender RPG1 and RPA1. (Some of you are scratching your heads and wondering what I'm talking about. In 1988, Fender developed a 1U rack mounted tube preamp and matching poweramp, which they issued a brochure to their dealers for. This never made it into production, and only one of each are in existence).
Still, the CD is a great little combo for the smaller venues I play at, and I'm having fun with it. Creating guitar tones is easy, and it sounds very good for a solid state amp. I may be swapping out the Celestion Speaker for a JBL D-120, as long as that doesn't void the warranty.

Great little amp!

Glad to hear you decided to go for the CD. I think you'll really come to love the tonal possibilities. I actually like the Celestion speaker and find it has plenty of bottom end which some don't. If you are like me you might want an amp cover for your CD. The Hot Rod Deluxe cover is a near perfect fit. It is just a little short, maybe 1/2" but fully covers the grille cloth.

I'd pass on anything Cyber, well..... because it's Cyber. It's unsupported and discontinued. Maybe for half the price I'd maybe consider it.
Not a big fan. Just my opinion.

And what's with the NOS. That's New Old Stock. Did some Alien build one 50 years ago, never use it and finally decide to sell it? Don't fall for the current NOS bunk either. It's just marketing hype and means nothing as far as this current production stuff goes. If it's sitting on his floor, it's used not NOS. They went for $699 new. It's got to be 5 or 6 years old.

Oh, and check this out. His price seems a little high too. This seems more in line. Personally, I'd look at a Line 6 Spider Jam. It's a fun amp.

OK Gang,

I just got off the phone with Fender, and posed some questions about the Cyber Deluxe. They will honor the full warranty on the amp, even though it's been discontinued for just over 4 years now, (January 2006 is when the last one was made).

@ 88vette: The JBL D-120 has plenty of bottom end. These are the same speakers Fender put in the Twins in the 60's. This amp has a cover included, but I'm still going to go one better, since I plan to use it for small club gigs, I'm ordering an ATA Road Case.

@63Supro: This amp is NOS, since no one around this area likes to mess around with 'programmable' amplifiers, that's why it's still there. It's in the middle of jughead town. I've tried many other amplifiers, including the Line 6. I wasn't impressed. This amp is already home with me. :D
