I have a Frontman 25R that I replaced the stock speaker with an Eminence Ragin Cajun. Sounds great. But .....

The bass is now so powerful that with the amp volume set at 8 and above and guitar volume set at 10 (guitar is an '09 MIM Strat with Fender SCN pups) and the neck pickup selected, the speaker moves so much air that the grille cloth vibrates violently against the edges of the speaker cutout. To date I have installed 4 additional screws around the edge of the speaker baffle to make the cabinet/baffle more solid, mounted the cabinet on Aurelex MoPads ( http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/MoPAD/ ) to prevent vibrations from transferring to the wooden cabinet that the amp sits on, stuck some soft, thin spacers around the speaker cutout between the grille cloth and baffle board, turned the volume down to 7 on the amp (still quite loud), and turned the bass on the amp down to 1 (actually sounds better with the new speaker and SCNs).

I think the real problem is that the grille cloth is not very transparent acoustically. Any suggestions on a more transparent grille cloth and mounting method to keep it from vibrating? TIA

You could always house the speaker in an extension cab.......... 8) Mike

Not really an option and the same issues would still potentially exist.

The grill cloth should not touch the baffle, It should be on 3/4" X1" ( aprox) frame .
So the grille cloth is 3/4 inches away the from the baffle.

That's many old fender are built. Is your Frontman built like old Fender ?

No, the grille cloth is just wrapped tight around the baffle and stapled in back.

I think that is your problem, grille cloth too close from the baffle, It should have a frame around the grille cloth to keep it far from the baffle.

What can I say. That is how Fender built the amp. I'm trying to find a good way to space the grille from the baffle around the speaker cutout. The spacers I am using now work, but since they are not continuous, they cause a slight ripple in the grille cloth that is visible in the right light.

Suggestions?

Not as amazing as cheap and easy. It must have been hard to design a speaker with enough bass rolled off so the grill won't buzz.

I think that is your problem, grille cloth too close from the baffle, It should have a frame around the grille cloth to keep it far from the baffle.

Well, thanks to your comment about a frame under the grille cloth, I have solved my problem. I took a little trip to my local Guitar Center to check out how the grilles were mounted on various amps. On the higher price amps the grille cloth (or metal) is spaced away from the baffleboard. On the cheaper amps (not just Fender), the grille cloth was laying right on the baffle board.

So, I then took a a trip to my local hardware store and purchased a 6' wooden strip. It was about 1" wide and 3/16" thick with rounded edges on top. I cut four lengths and test fit them under the grille cloth by just sliding them between the baffle board and grille cloth. I pulled them out to make a few adjustments and spray painted them satin black. I pushed them back under the grille cloth, and voila! Instant grille frame. The tension from the grille near the edges holds them tightly in place and the satin black paint makes them invisible through the grille. The grille cloth now has a nice smooth rise from each edge then flattens out. It looks like it was made that way. Net result from the frame and extra screws through the baffle board edges? Zero vibrations. With the Ragin Cajin speaker and the mods I made, the amp sounds louder and cleaner than when I brought it home. :D
