Hi,
Another Newbie here..

Last fall I picked up a Blues Deluxe and so far I am still happy with it as a
whole however there are some minor tweaks I am interested in.
Before my purchase, I had test-drove a Vox AC30CC2X(?) equipped with
the Celestion Alnico Blue speakers. They both sounded pretty good to my
ahem, deaf/hard of hearing ears... well not totally deaf but it's going...

Anyway, I liked the both of them but at the time, I wasn't so sure I wanted
to go with Vox for the price, I thought the Blues Deluxe offered what I was
looking for in the way of controls which I thought made perfect sense and
the amp certainly provided the volume I need. (Some day, I will be playing through an amp that sits like a chip on my shoulder... errr boombox on my shoulder.. heh heh.)

Celestion is making a new speaker called the
"Gold" which is built to sound like the Alnico Blue but handle 45 watts and I am thinking this would be an interesting speaker to try out.
I am wondering if anyone here has actually tried one of the Gold speakers yet and can offer an impression.
It was suggested that the crunch would probably improve at lower volumes
so this "may" be a plus.

http://professional.celestion.com/guita ... .asp?ID=32

I like to play '50s rock (Buddy & Chuck), country (Waylon & Willie), gospel, Jazz, and bluesey stuff.
Some guitars expected to be used are
For Electric
Strat (SSS) (HSS) etc
Tele
LP Studio (P90, and/or 490R and 498T humbuckers)

Accoustic
Esteve Classical
Martin D-15 Dreadnought
Gibson LG0 (an all mahogany small body)

Who knows maybe a harmonica fiddle, mandolin and banjo are some future instruments that may be played through this amp.

So............ finally...
The Question:
Anyone know about the Gold in a Blues Deluxe?
Would I stay within the "Blues" tone of the amp? An Improvement?
I like punchy and bassy but not necessarily too muddy.

Another idea I had was simply make a couple of external cabs and
mount different select speakers in them and mic to the external cab
and via the speaker jacks, use the Blues Deluxe's amp component as it were a pseudo-amp-head and use the speakers outboard in external cabs.
(This way I could have a small collection of speakers to choose from)

I don't expect to do live stage work and will be using it as one of my studio amps. However, my hearing isn't the greatest and I have been concerned
about how speakers will stand up to loud play over time (ie decades).

anyway...
I like the amp, some don't, I know.
I know it isn't vintage, handwired, top shelf, nor the DoAll amp but I like it.
A '59 Bassman would be nice and maybe someday I will be able to afford one. 8)
For me, it's a hobby and it should be fun.
Thanks for reading, sorry for the lonnng wind... I don't get out much.
My face scares people.

I use a "Gold" in my Blues Deluxe Re-issue and love it. It's expensive, but has a great bottom end and warm creamy sound that I like and sounds great clean. I am also running some NOS '59 Sylvania 6L6's and 12AX7 and a 12AU7 for the phase inverter and they add as well to the tone.

The Gold is a huge upgrade from the stock speaker. I think it is due to the Alnico magnets they use. That's why Fender uses the alnico Jensens in some of the older amps. The gold will handle the power (50 watts rated) where the older alnico speakers have much lower power ratings. I also have a "blue"(sounds very good), but it is only rated for 15 watts, so I have to be careful where I put it.

I don't paly much older style blues, but play more classic rock/blues using a touch of tubescreamer with it.

If you go that route, let us know how it sounds.

Hi Strat dog,
Thanks for the response.
It's kinda spooky to consider a nice speaker when there aren't any available to demo.
I've heard the Jensens and they are nice speakers too.
Next to the Gold, in Jensen form, I was looking at the P12N:
http://www.jensentone.com/p12n.php
I understand they are now made in Italy.

Another alternative I thought may be possible would be to find an vintage speaker that meets the watt and impedance specs. & recone it if necessary.

Speaking of "Strat", I just placed an order for a new American Standard in Black with maple neck.

http://www.fender.com/products/search.p ... 0110402769

It'll be my first strat - expecting it sometime next week.

Just read that the body has H/S/H Pickup Routing. If so, that just saved me
a lot of sweating bullets over carving out a perfectly good body should I decide to drop some humbuckers in some day. I've toyed with the idea of
P90s - ahh the possibilities of impossibilities. Maybe even make a Les Paul style body and use a Strat neck.

Oh and about those tubes. I've been kicking some RCAs and maybe some Telefunkens around for special applications - who knows.
Thanks for the pointers.
:D

Oh and before I forget, you mentioned the Tube Screamer which I've come
across several times

I've also been eyeballin' these pedals:

Seymour Duncan SFX-11 Twin Tube Blue - http://www.seymourduncan.com/products/s ... power_gri/

Radial Engineering Tone Bone Classic - http://www.tonebone.com/tb-classic.htm

The thing I like about the tone bone classic is that it's using the popular
12AX7 tube and I don't know much about the tubes used in the Twin tube blue - more research needed I guess.

Oh yes, About that Blue speaker being 15 watt, There's this adaptor available from groove tubes and one from THD called YellowJacket
I understand that it allows you to use EL84s in the place of 6L6 output tubes and reduce the output voltage.
I DON"T know for sure, but it sounds like these may let you use the Blue speakers with a bit more forgiveness in the way of "blowing your speaker".

There are 3 sorts of telefunken ECC83:

Hi Tsan,
If you're addressing me, no I do not have any Telefunken tubes
I do have a few others at the moment but they are buried and I cannot
remember the exact model numbers.
I remember having Sylvania, RCA, Phillips, GE, Raytheon and a few others.
Also, if my memory is correct, the Telefunken equipment was sold to Ei which I understand is STILL in business dispite rumors they were bombed out during the war. I doubt I have any JAN tubes.

I would think that Fender/Groovetubes could make some money duplicating some of the best tubes ever made. however, I think there
are some enviromental issues that force tube companies to seek
alternative materials to produce a tube product.

Anyway, those are the vintage tubes I have and if I don't have them,
I'll likely look for them for special occasion use due to their price.
Sorry if I couldn't much help to you.
