The specs for the FM 65R don't say anything but "comes with one 8 ohm speaker"... not the usual "8 ohm nominal" Can I connect it to a 16 ohm cab without damaging the output stage?

Thanks,

always try to match BUT
you can run higher
DO NOT run lower!!!!

so yeah you can run a 16 ohm cab
just don;t go with a 4 ohm load or anything under 8 ohm load!!!!!!
again, NEVER under !!!!
