Yeah, the obvious problem is that its too loud.

I pulled out tubes 2 & 3 and it sounds much better at lower volumes. Crisis averted.

However i presume the loads change since since the output has been changed.

Should i disconnect a speaker? My logic presumes half the amount of tubes = double the amount of impedance?

Nah, leave them be. It won't change the impedance.

Well, Supro's cool, and sure, it's OK to run the two speakers at a 4ohm load, but you're asking the two power tubes to work at an increased current level. Kind of like adding another 2X12(4ohm) to the original amp. Your view of the output section was correct. Two power tubes in the Twin would like to work with an 8ohm load, as would the output trans. The negative feedback loop is also affected by this change. But you know, these guys are tough as nails, so if it sounds good- go for it!!! Art

I've never been able to kill my Twin. :D
As long as everything's in good shape you'll be fine.
Why not just get a lower wattage amp. Twins are really serious overkill, but seriously cool. I played my SF like that for a good while. Mine's a 100 watt SF master volume Twin. It's still fine and still way too loud with 2 tubes pulled.

Oh Yeah, there's no gettin' around the depth and soul of a Twin Reverb. My old Twin served me very well over the years; from church, through bars, to the outdoor fests, and back again. Maybe, it's just me, but the amp can perform well at any volume level. The"sweet spot", IMO is not necessarily a matter of voltage, current, saturation, etc. in the amp. But rather, how one uses their fingers and all of the controls on the guitar and amp together. OK, I'm done, just had a moment of Twin indulgence. Art

Yeah, id think of getting a vibrolux since it has a solid state rectifier like the twin and i love the headroom. but im low on funds as i just bought a car.....

but still, the twins now right for me, i was running it at about 3, 3.5 most gigs which was alright but at some smaller ones it was on two which didnt engage the whole tone but now ive pulled it i think it'll be fine.

Thanks for the reassurance guys!

You can put a solid state rectifier in any amp buy replacing the rectifier tube with one of these
http://www.webervst.com/ccap.html
Personally I like the sag and compression of a tube rectifier amp. A buddy of mine uses them in his Bassman RI and swears by them. Still sags but is a little different. It's supposed to emulate a rectifier tube but doesn't need filament power so it lets the power tranny run a little cooler. I don't know I don't use them.

Or

I saw an article in GP magazine about a mod to install a switchable SS rectifier in a Fender amp with if I remember correctly silicon diodes so you can have the best of both worlds.

Not meant as anything my friend. I had no idea you could do the switchable thing till I saw the article. I don't do amp modding. I just look for obvious stuff and fix it. That's as far as my training goes. I learned a lot from the HRDlx I had. It was required.
By the way, I read on another forum that Fender actually recently are putting better boards in the HRD series amps. The guy noticed it on a recent conversion he was doing on a HRDlx. It's a little thicker and the traces are slightly more robust. They didn't really do anything to address the heat related issues but maybe it will help. Who knows? Maybe all the bitching I do here about these amps is starting to pay off.

I think they read them. I believe that's why this particular forum exists. As a marketing and information gathering tool. No more, no less. A smart company needs to do that.

I dunno about that, Supro.

They still haven't re-issued the blonde Dick Dale "Double Showman Amp" I asked for a while back.

:(

Don't know. Seems pretty recent.Go to www.thefenderforum.com and take a look. By the looks of it here there still seems to be a bit of trouble with them.
