Looking for a little practice amp, solid state or tube. Can anyone recommend a couple (preferably of each), Fender or otherwise? Right now the Super Champ XD is in the lead.

Marshall Class 5, 70's SF Champ, Pignose, Roland Cube, Blackheart, Peavey. Try a bunch, you can do a lot better than SCXD or 600.

C'mon Supro, we all know you don't like it, but there's really nothing wrong with the SCXD.

I guess I should add I play mostly indie rock stuff, some classic rock as well. White Stripes, Radiohead, Zep, etc.

I'm trying to cast as wide a net as possible so I can look into more of these on an individual level, figured the knowledgeable people here would have some insight. Looking to spend at most 400 if possible.

They should have made it without the cheesy effects. They wrecked a perfectly good amp by making it a hybrid. They did the same thing to the Vibro Champ. It really didn't really need the effects to sell the amp. The effects just pollute the tone of the amp. It's a shame. And yeah I did get to spend some time with it. A friend of mine tried to pawn one off on me.

I would also recommend that you look at the Frontman amps for solid state and check out the Carvin Vintage 16 for a nice small tube amp. Great tone and made in the USA.

For Indie rock solid-state, look at the Frontman series. The 25R & 65R are very nice, but the Frontman 212R has a 3rd channel, more drive, if you need more distortion.

For home use, a Fender Vibro Champ XD is a nice little tube amp, I have one and love it for what it is. For jamming with other players, a Super Champ has more volume and might suit better. As far as the effects go, you don't have to use any of the effects, it has couple of very nice straight up Tweed and Blackface tones and is plenty LOUD inside a house.

For Solid State choices, the Tech 21 Trademark 30 is a solid little amp, sounds good, ruggedly built and made in USA.

Cheers,

Snowy.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Every guitar player should own a Pignose.

They're cheap, portable, battery or ac powered, and they make bridge pickups sound raunchy as all hell, especially when goosed with an overdrive or compressor. They're only clean at whisper volumes, but when turned up the dirt is controlable with the guitar volume and picking dynamics, just like a tube amp. Plus they're loud. Most everyone is pretty surprised when they hear the sounds that come out of it. I use it more than my Epi Valve Jr as a quieter practice amp.

But if you're looking for something with more versatility (i.e. for practice and light jamming with friends), that niche is filled with possibilities, many of which have already been mentioned.

Just build a 5E3 and be done with it.

Sorry Supro, I wholeheartedly disagree, I find nothing cheesy about the effects, and find the tone to be excellent and, according to the reviews I've read a good proportion of veteran musician's who own/have played one disagree with you, too. Of course it's all a matter of personal opinion. Right?

Don't think of it as a hybrid amp; think of it as a tube amp with a new way to control the gain without cranking it up.

It still will operate like any other tube amp if you choose voicing 1 or 4 and crank the gain and volume.
