I think the Tung-Sol re-issue is adequate for the task and you can find one pretty quickly on Ebay.

Cool I'll take a look! How does the rectifier affect the tone on the DR? Should I invest in some NOS tubes or it's not worth it in your opinion?

When you change it you might want to check the bias voltage just to be on the safe side. NOS tubes can really be worth the bucks. I use a NOS JAN Phillips 5751 in V1 in my Egnater Rebel to drop the gain a little.

The ancient tube question that has yet to be answered: are some better than others? I can only offer a conditional yes. Some tubes are certainly better than others, although I believe that quality is not definitively linked to manufacturer, age, or source. Groove Tubes are much maligned yet I have managed to get several great sets; they have been so good, in fact, that I cannot tell the difference between them and JJs or Tung-Sols.

I would advise you to retain the stock tubes for now. They came with the thing and are probably just fine -- other than your dodgy rectifier. Fragility is the nature of vacuum tubes: sometimes they work great and sometimes they do not. Some people have great luck replacing their stock tubes with "better" -- more expensive -- tubes. I have not noticed any dramatic difference. In the shop I will buy whatever happens to be kicking around. Right now my Blues Jr. and Pro Jr. are both stocked with Tung-Sol 12ax7s and Groove Tubes EL84s. I think they sound fine.

The difference is lots of the old tubes were military spec (Mill Spec). They were tough tubes. I've had tubes in my older amps last over 20 years. GE, RCA, Sylvania were great tubes.

No luck finding any re-issue Tung-Sol, do they even exist??

I don't plan to change the rest of the tubes, just need to get rid of this tube rattle, which I believe is coming from the rectifier. The 6v6 in my DRRI are EH, and I'm very pleased with the way the amp sounds, no need to ruin a good thing :)

Shall I just order a JJ rectifier and call it a day? Any other parts I need to worry about? Just like to keep extras around in case... My Mesa Lonestar Special is known for going thru rectifiers and fuses.

How do I check the bias? What tools are needed? I don't usually work on my amps, just replace tubes and speakers, I don't bother with the other stuff...

The SovTek shown on this page will work fine......

I've been field-testing a pair of EH 6L6s in a '67 Bandmaster. Thus far, they sound great -- very similar to a black-plate RCA. It's too soon to predict their durability at this point though. If they last ten years I'll deem them "fit for human consumption".

Eurotubes has a video and sells the Bias Probe. It's not a huge investment. It's a good idea to check the bias once in a while and a must if you change power tubes unless you amp is cathode biased.

Arjay... Have you ever been to Music Brokers in Phoenix at Central Ave just south of Camelback ?? They have a bunch of vintage fender amps there...

No I never have, CB. But I've read you and others here make mention of them several times. If I ever get up to the "big city" again I'll definitely check them out. The few times I've been to Phoenix I stopped by the GC in Goodyear and another place in Peoria (forget the name -- "The Bass Place"?). My luthier used to own Precision Guitars up there but he sold the shop about five years ago to move down here.

Thanks for the tip.

Arjay

so on the way home I happen to drive by GC, I went in to see if they had any 5AR4 tubes that I can pick up to see if that's what's causing the rattle, all they had were 2 GT tubes, one was already rattling a bit when I put it next to my ear and shook it (same as the stock Ruby one), the other was dead quiet, great, took it home and now my tube rattle is almost completely gone!

It turns out that cheap Chinese made Ruby is giving a lot of people headaches! I'm gonna look for a NOS rectifier and bias probe, wanna make sure my amp is in top shape!

Man I love the sound coming out of this thing! I haven't enjoyed playing a Strat this much since I don't know when... the Fralin Blues Specials were made for this amp! guess I'm gonna need to get me some ear plugs, I keep turning the amp up to 6+ that's where it really shines! My neighbors are gonna hate me soon :D

Man...I've got to get my DRRI re-tubed. It's in desperate need, yet it's being neglected at the moment. I bought it used with the stock tubes and I'm dying to hear what it sounds like when given a fresh set and a bias. I'm sure I'll love it more than when I first bought it.

Get yourself a 5/16" nut driver and check all the keps holding the speaker to the baffle. They should be about 20 inch/pounds, about a ¼ turn more snug than finger tight.

Funny you mention that, couldn't find any deep sockets with the right size, mine is actually 11/32", but I was able to at least check them and they seem ok.

Thanks supro for the pencil tip, it's definitely the rectifier!

I've got a Vaco 11/32" hollow shafted nut driver purchased in the mid 60s for the express use of removing speakers from Fender cabs.

I just used the pencil eraser test to pin point a weird "disharmonic" I was getting on #F, especially at the 11th fret of the G string. It was a 6V6 Groove tube causing the trouble.

So that's where my favorite guitar tech ended up. The Border Patrol's gain is Phoenix's loss. Precision Guitar was a fine shop.

So that's where Thad Robosson ended up. The Border Patrol's gain is Phoenix's loss. Precision Guitar was a fine shop.

True, but I think guitar electronics is better.. However, Thad did a complete refret for me on a 73 lp deluxe... It was good work..
