I own a Blues Junior NOS. The BJ is so far removed from what David Gilmour used that your tone quest might be close to futile. In order to get Gilmour tone you will need the following:

1. The guitar that he uses when you hear the tone you want.
2. THe effects pedals and setting he uses when you get the tone you want.
3. The amplifier he is using when you hear the tone you want.
4. David Gilmour to play the guitar for you, because only he can get the tone you want.

Seriously, I would suggest you search for your own tone. Remember that the BJ is good for blues, classic rock and I like it for country too. I get all the tone out of it I want with no effects plugged in. I am a fairly new player, but I have long given up the quest for someone elses sound and instead concentrate on creating my own.

I do play songs like Comfortably Numb and Coming Back to Life on my BJ. When I do, I play with more reverb to make the tone wet and I play it fairly clean and then hit the boost button on the solos. No it doesn't sound like David playing, but even more gratifying, it sounds like me playing some really cool songs.

Great advise!
Andrea, don't get too disenchanted. Gilmour has a fortune in custom gear. It's his signature sound that he spent half a lifetime cultivating. Time is always better spent finding your own voice instead of trying to chase something that comes from a person's soul, hands ans technique.
Good Luck.

I fully understand what you mean, I also search for my sound from about 2 years... but sometimes you got that day when you want to play Pink Floyd and I was curious if any of you know some setup for the Blues Jr.

;)

This is absolutely correct. The BJ is a wonderful amplifier, but it will not make you sound like David Gilmour. Most amplifiers won't, for that matter. You're going to need a lot of money to even begin to replicate tones like that.

Not wanting to sound too philosophical about it, but to look at this question another way, guess who Dave Gilmour would sound like if he played your guitar through your Blues Junior?

You would hear one hell of a guitar player that minus all the effects etc on top, still sounded like.......Dave Gilmour! 8)

Maybe you could grab a couple of pedals that will help you feel like you are at least getting some of the sounds he uses, but, as others have said, work on your playing, phrasing etc.

By all means copy Dave's signature licks, vibrato, attack and phrasing, he won't mind, because they are the most important pieces of the puzzle you are trying to solve.

Rest assured that even as you work on that stuff, you are developing your own sound even if you don't realise it. Some things just happen when you're not looking and all those sounds will eventually come out the other end sounding like you playing some pretty cool stuff!

Cheers,

Snowy

Take a look at this page, it has all of the gear/settings for all of his stuff, just pick the album and find the song you want.

http://www.gilmourish.com/?page_id=205

Just remember that every amp is different and the EQ ranges vary between them. So a Marshall with the treble knob on 6 might be a Blues Jr. on 4. Use the setting listed on the page above as a start and then use your ears to fine tune.

Hi Andrea here's some information I found for you:
David Gilmour's early Floyd effects consisted of a Binson Echorec tape delay (like Barrett, he used this device from his first days with the band), a Dallas-Arbiter Fuzzface fuzz box, Uni-Vibe pedal, Vox wah-wah pedal, a DeArmond volume pedal, and Leslie and Yamaha RA-200 rotating speaker cabinets. The latter were routed through the output sections of Hiwatt heads and then to WEM 4×12 cabinets. In 1972, his effects boxes were mounted in a custom cabinet, and his array of processors grew to include a second Binson Echorec and a second Fuzzface, an MXR Phase 90, a Crybaby wah-wah, an Electro-Harmonix Electric Mistress flanger, Big Muff fuzz, an Orange treble and bass booster, and a custom-built tone pedal.

The real stumbling block is the Blues Jr. It's a far cry fro a 100 watt Hiwatt. The transformers in Hiwatts are huge. There are Univibe clones around, some better than others, Fuzzzface is still available, if you're handy, general guitar gadgets has a Fuzz Face kit http://www.generalguitargadgets.com/com ... Itemid,45/
BYOC also has a lot of effect kits that are close to the originals.

Just to get yourself familiar with his gear this page may come in handy. It did for me!

http://www.gilmourish.com/?page_id=205

I was asked once to play some session guitar for a friend on a track which needed a "gilmourish" solo/lead so I searched for a gear listing and found this. Click on the album of your choice and it has the gear he used for it. Good luck!

Well, I disagree that you have to have everything that Gilmour has to sound like him. Learning his phrasing is important and understanding how to layer your effects so you have similar amounts of distortion, delay, and reverb. Obviously there are some other effects but you do not have to have the exact same equipment. Like others have stated, you will not sound exactly like Gilmour but you can get similar sounds. Using only the amp, it will be very difficult if not impossible, but the amp will work fine with effects.

Basically, it will sound like someone who is attempting to sound like him. It's human nature to emulate people you like. Now, in my neighborhood the little girls are trying out the the new Miley Cyrus look with the really short shorts and boots. Man I wish the girls were older LOL. It's like Halloween around here.

Everyone tried to emulate musicians tone and style from cavemen to Robert Johnson to Buddy Guy to Hendrix. It's nothing more than musical Halloween. The thing is no one ever remembers the imitators, but always remember the innovators. I'd rather have a bad original sound than a bad imitated sound any time. With your own signature tone, there's nothing to compare it to. There's nothing wrong with using your own sound and creating your own arrangements of DG's songs.

I agree with everything you said except the bolded.

Most Fender amps (BJR included) would be a decent platform to begin building a "Gilmour" sound.

Gilmour has primarly used Hiwatt heads throughout his career. There was a period in the '80s where he also used Twin Reverbs along with Mesa Boogie Mark 111 heads.

Gilmour's strategy is to use a amp that produces a clean, warm sound. And then use effects to color the sound or produce overdrive. With that in mind, a good Fender tube amp will satisfy the requirement of having a clean, warm platform to build from.

That said, you're spot on in your comments of building your own sound and not trying to chase the fingers and effects settings of others.

Hi Andrea,
I have a Blues Junior and I use a POD XT as a preamp for it. The POD has a few presets that are a very Gilmourish sounding. One called "Run Like He!!", and another called "AnotherBrickWall" which sound like the guitar on The Wall album. I remember playing another one that sounded more like the guitar on A Momentary Lapse of Reason, but I think I lost it while making my own presets. :( You can dial the POD in to get just about any sound you want.

I got my POD used, for under $150 on ebay, and it has all of the effects and amp models that I will ever need all in one small package. I love it, and it sounds great through the BJr or any good tube amp. I think that the POD is one solution that won't break the bank, but it will give you the sound you want, or as close as any non-David Gilmour can get.
