hey guys I've got a twin reverb that I'm trying to give some life to, I'm going to be swapping all the preamp and output tubes and I've read that changing the output tubes for a different type can have an affect on the tone, are there any good guides to selecting tubes for an amp as the number of brands and models is slightly overwhelming .thanks in advance guys.

As far as new-production 6L6GCs go, JJ's or TAD's are probably the best around. They'll sound pretty sweet once biased properly but will not last near as long as NOS bottles such as vintage black-plate RCA's or mil-spec Sylvania's.

Hi,

Try SED "winged C" matched 6L6GC and E83CC JJ-tesla for preamp (short plate, smooth plate).

By the way, 6L6 can be biased hot (I remember an idle current around 55mA per tube)

hey thanks for the advice guys, one more question, which has the greater effect on tone, pre amp tubes or output tubes also is it a good Idea to match output and preamp brands or can you mix and match?

Hi,

All tubes make colors. V1 is very important in clean channel and it could be appreciated to have an "crytal" tube ... Actually, make you own experience.

Hi there, IMO; The first tube the guitar signal sees is your sonic-tonal signature. The rest of the amp bumps up and colors that signal in subtle ways.(excluding any distotion or high gain circuits) If we're talking about a '65 Reissue, this would definately apply. Mixing pre amp tubes is great fun, and they don't need any brand relationship to the power tubes. So in the case of a Twin, I would prioritze my selection. If, lets say you always use the Vib channel, then I would go for NOS RCA7025 or Mullard(or any high quality tube) in the V2 position. If the reverb and vibrato are doing their job, I'd leave them alone(V3,V4,& V5), same for the normal channel( V1) if it's quiet. For the phase inverter(V6), a guality matched tube is best(GE 12AT7,GE 6201, RCA 12AT7, etc.) Also any Joint-Army-Navy(JAN) designated 5751 tube would do the job here. The power tubes have been covered very well, by the other folks. The GT tubes seem to have QC problems lately. But a pre-burned and tested GT6L6S or GT6L6GE quad, would also be worth consideration. The bottom line IMHO, is that you could just buy a few of each brand pre amp tube(old or new) and have a great time swapping them around, until you find the sound you like!!! Those NOS tubes are just benchmarks, you may find an $8 12AX7 that really hits the mark ! Art
