Yeah, yeah, I know a lot of you think the HRD is a piece of junk, but I like the clean sound I get from it. I'm having to use stomp boxes for the dirty, but might prefer to use the dirty channel on the amp if it sounded better.

Has anyone replaced the tubes in the HRD and gotten a better dirty sound? I play blues and classic rock (SRV, Jimi, Zep, Trower, Travers, etc). I don't want to effect the clean sound (unless it can be even better). Any suggestions, and prices? Thanks.

Blues option #1

Thanks for the site info, that's awesome. In the Blues #1 option you mentioned it says "Description: A pair of the JJ 6L6GC's for a big warm sound, a standard ECC83S in V1, an ECC832 in V2 to drop the gain a bit & give a very natural blues tone & a balanced ECC83S in V3 for the phase inverter. BIG, FAT, warm and smooth!"

I'm looking for a little better gain, so when this says it "drops the gain", does that mean it's creating less gain? I don't necessarily want that. Has anyone tried this Blues #1 retubing?

Let me ask you this: the Blues #2 says: "Description: A pair of the JJ 6V6's to drop the output to about 30 watts, a standard ECC83S in V1, an ECC832 in V2 to drop the gain a bit & give a very natural blues tone & a balanced ECC83S in V3 for the phase inverter. Smooth, a little earlier breakup, a great tone!"

If I drop the output to ghet earlier breakup, would that give me more gain? Would it also lower the loudness of the amp at the same time?

I'm new to tubes so sorry for the maybe dumb questions.

That's what I had in my HRDlx. Great sounding tube package. I biased mine around 80-85mv. They got rid of the harsh high end and warmed it up quite a bit. There was plenty of gain left.

Uh oh, red flag for me! You "biased" yours at 80-85mv? What the heck is that? Can't I just pop out the old tubes and put the new ones in?

No. You should never just pop in power tubes. The bias should always be checked. Go to the link below. It's not rocket science and all you need is a $15 Radio Shack meter.

Bias is relative to the tubes characteristics (datasheet) and often specified in case of matched pair used in class AB amplifier.

+1 on jj tubes, but getting more gain out of hrdlx is near impossible unless you put a pedal in front
