Because I am going to university in the fall, and don't want to bring in my bass and guitar rigs, I am looking for a reasonable size amp that will do both, at jammable volumes. Since the BassMan series has a history of being a bad-ass guitar amp, I was wondering how the new TV bassman series will perform.

Another factor is effects, I will probably want to use reverb/delay, wah, and a tube screamer or something similar.

Anyway I was just wondering if i would be able to get a good quitar tone out of the TV BassMan Duo Ten, I know its not all tube, but what can you do.

That's a good question.

And the best answer will probably be found by checking one of these amps out in a store. Bring your own guitar and pedalboard if possible as well and take it for a lengthy "test drive".

I've found that basses can sound good in many clean tube guitar amps, but not necessarily the other way around. Guitar amps tend to cover more frequencies, so a guitar through a new bassman would be missing a lot of top end.

The new bassman amps are not related at all to the heritage of the tweed/brown/blonde/blackface bassmans.

I've run my Jazz bass through a Princeton Reverb as well as my Bandmaster 2x12 and it sounds pretty good. The PR doesn't have a lot of low end, but if this is for university, you're not looking to shake the dorms. On the other hand, the Bandmaster 2x12 sounded amazing on a track I recorded on Sunday with a Shure KSM27 about 3 feet back - for bass.

Other alternative - get a Pod, and then you'll have settings for both. Not the best sonically, but will fit your budget, and you can play with headphones on and not disturb neighbors/roommates.

If you want a jammable amp, I'd pick up a Princeton or a Deluxe Reverb. Both take pedals well, and will be OK for bass. Also, if you're playing at jams with a PA, you could buy a DI (Radial Pro DI is fine) and go through the PA with your bass - or a little amp and PA.
