I've had my BJ for about 6 weeks now, and i love its clean sounds when i play my Tokai SG through it. Up to the point of break-up it sounds really good, clear and articulate. Trouble is, the distorted point beyond that doesn't sound very good; it's all muddy with no definition, especially the lower notes. It's probably best described as a "farty" sound. Anyone know what's going on? My BJ is second hand and has the cream board in, but i don't know how old it actually is. It's had some new valves at some point too, but i don't know whether they were for the pre amp or power amp.

Regards

Marge

You may find some useful info here: http://home.comcast.net/~machrone/bluesjunior.htm
I have done most of these mods and they made the Blues jr a much better amp.

Get a better speaker!!!! I have the Eminence Cannabis Rex, and I love it. I've tried all different types, Jensen, Celestion (Marshall 2x12 cab). The bad thing is, my ears won't tell your ears what's good, but from what I've seen here on the forum, Eminence speakers seem to be preferred

Better tubes and speaker. The tubes in mine were triple branded, so they were replaced first.
For a speaker I recommend a Scumback ( www.scumbackspeakers.com )

Hello Marge,

A few weeks back I changed tubes{valves} in my blues jr nos,
the smaller ones, I changed 12ax7's to 12at7's my amp stays clean
to about 4 and begins to breakup previously it started at about 3.

When I want to be really clean I use a frontman 25r , my blues jr
will never be this clean and the frontman will never be a blues jr.

Soon, I'm Going to change the big tubes{valves} and see what that
accomplishes. Hope things work out for you.

Cheers.

Hello everyone..my first post here. Thanks for all the great advice I have gotten so far.

Last week I bought a new American Standard HHS strat...love it! I feel like a made a year's worth of progress as a player in one weekend :)

After a lot of research I got a Blues Jr. I played it for about 2 hours at the GC, back and forth with a crate Palimino and decided to go with the Jr. I had a few reservations with the tinny sound on the high end but figured it was my lack of EQ expertise. Since messing around with it I have gotten better tone.

I have also read a lot about the mods referred to earlier in this thread. The rex speaker and others. I found the Canninis Rex for about $90 and figure the other mods will run about another $200. The amp already cost $455.

Now...I have no beef spending $700 or $800 for a great amp but given it's size do you guys think the modified Blues Jr is worth it? Will I get a sweet amp if I invest the extra dough in the Jr? I play at home but often think of playing with others. I'm not sure if a HRD would be too much amp for my average use, I do like being able to crank the Jr. I love the tone I just wish it was a bit louder. I'm concerned about making the jump to a bigger amp and having too much.

Thanks again for such a great forum!
