You're only saying that because it's true.

All I've ever wanted is people to tell me when my playing or sound is bad. If I get a honest critique I can deal with it and improve. What I cant deal with is sycophantic people who tell you you sound great playing through a telephone speaker. There's no doubt some people here who hate my choice in amps/guitars/effects. It doesnt bother me, though I do value any honest input. If something is really amiss I want to know about it.

Personaly I think all online reviews are of no use whatsoever. At best your listening to someone elses playing, guitar and eq setup through a set of computer speakers.

So, are you saying you only want bad reviews? That anyone that says something good is being disingenuous because they couldn't really hear it, and are just being polite? The only way I have to hear your tracks is through computer speakers. To me and others, rock and roll shouldn't be too digitally clear. BTW, I thought "Teenage Depression Blues" was very good. Sorry. "$@! Break" could be your best work.

No it's not that I only seek bad reviews at all, I only seek trusted reviews of live performance. Recording is a very different thing, it can make a tone deaf banjo player sound like Jeff Beck with a good enough studio and engineer.

My whole point is that I, like most, know when I play badly. I know when what I'm playing sounds good, I know when it sounds bad. I do ask opinions on things, and take advice on board, but ultimately my decisions are my own. Thats exactly what I disagree with, with online gear reviews/demonstrations. The amount of straight to board recording and the number of guitar tracks on one of the tracks you mention, is unreal. Mini Mafia had something like 19 guitars on it. Not a very accurate representation of a strat into a marshall jcm800 is it. People are paid big money to portray equipment in its best light. I once met and became friends with a studio muso from the Birmingham scene in the mid 60's. He played with Winwood, The Moody Blues, The Move, Traffic. He introduced me to Iommi once. Anyways when I met him he owned this pub he'd bought on his 2 years earnings demo'ing GrooveTubes amps. In his words he was paid well to make em sound good. Thats why Fender, Marshall, Gibson and many others have a plethora of endorsees. Take Greg Koch for instance. I don't know how much he sells, but he's little heard of as a standalone recording artist on these shores. Sure he's held in high esteem in guitar playing circles everywhere, but he's not a big top10 artist, which is a shame. You see him demo'ing loads of gear, why? Because it sounds absolutely fantastic when he plays it.
I don't trust adverts, I don't 100% trust opinions. I do trust my ears. Best thing about that is, were all capable of it.

BTW thank you for the kind words. One of my biggest regrets is quitting that band and the way it all ended. It wasn't pleasant. All the songs, the ideas and the arrangement were the singers work. It was a bloody cushy number. Play this here, play that there, don't think, don't work. It really was easy. Still I'm the only one to blame for my bad decision (wheres that kicking your own arse emoticon).

How many times do you see, which pedal/amp/guitar threads? Where for all the world it looks like someone is asking a bunch of strangers to make a decision for them. I don't mind voicing a opinion, sometimes I'll even be coherent. I don't like the idea of making a decision for anyone outside my family though.

thanks to all who have posted. i guess my biggest concern was the reliability issue. when you see an amp, and it's going for a great price since it was used, you wonder why. is it because somebody just didn't care for the tone-do they need money-or does this amp have a problem that makes it unreliable.

here is an example. someone locally has a princeton 650 available for about a hundred dollars. that's about half of a new frontman/fm 65. i then see online reviews that talk about noise issues. since the amp is no longer made, there is no way to compare the 650 to a new one in the store.

i know its only a hundred bucks, but do i take a chance with the 650, or bump up to the fm65? opinions are welcome

Personally, I'd got for the FM65. It's new and has a warranty and is only 150 bucks more. I know it's more than twice as much but I'd be patient and save more money. An even better choice would be the FM212R. That's solid state land. I don't really care that much for solid state amps, but the FM65 and 212 are nice amps if you're low on cash. The 212 would be the more versatile gigging amp IMO. You can always try them both out and see what you think. Be sure to turn the 650 up loud and listen for anything out of the ordinary.
