Any amp that has a BLUE jewel light is good for playing the blues :P just kidding.

It's already been said here, but I'll say it again, any amp can be used for the blues unless it has buttons and switches labelled Burn, Ultra, X-Treme, Mega, etc etc.

But, if I was forced to pick 5 amps: A massive Fender Quad Reverb 4x12 worked for Albert Collins, BB King uses a solid state Gibson Lab Series, Clapton used a Marshall JTM45 combo on the Beano album, Buddy Guy has been fond of Bassmans, and Muddy Waters probably just used whatever the house amp was wherever venue he happened to be playing at on a particular night.

Me, I use a Deluxe Reverb reissue or a Mesa-Boogie Blue Angel for blues and everything else.

I reread that you're asking for 'small' amps. Well it depends on your budget really, but here goes in my opinion (mass production non-boutique and non-vintage. All 'small', no more than 22 watts. I assume by small you mean larger than a Champ though):
1. Fender '57 Tweed Deluxe reissue
2. Deluxe Reverb reissue
3. Princeton Reverb reissue
4. Blues Junior
5. Vox AC15 - yes I said Vox

I tried the Night Train, but liked the Egnater better. I also like the AC30 and 15. The 30 is seriously loud and heavy but sounds great. I think it all depends on your own ears, guitars and playing style. It's fun amp shopping though. :D

Mesa has a new one called Transatlantic I believe. Does anyone know anything about it? I checked it out on utube. Pretty cool.

I spent a lot of time trying out a ton of amps and I kept going back to the Egnater Rebel. I can still find new tones after 10 months and I hardly ever use a distortion pedal. The cool thing is when you set the tube mix knob at 12:00 you get a nice volume boost because all 4 power tubes are being utilized equally. The tone is crazy cool too. Also when you turn the watts dial, you will hear a little static. It's covered in the manual and it's normal not a dirty pot. It has something to do with changing voltage to the tubes. I opened the Rebel up to check the bias and see how it's built. It has thick double sided boards with plated through holes, and everything is solidly mounted and neatly wired and bundled. I couldn't find any ribbon cables just hand wired connections. Also there are bias test point sockets on the board next to the adjustment trim pots with the proper voltages silk screened on the board. It's just a fun rig. I would try the Egnater Tweaker too. I tried one a couple weeks ago and it a really sweet amp too.

I was in the same boat but only I didn't buy a new amp in over 30 years. The last amp I bought was a new 76 Twin. I bought a HRDlx thinking it would work out for me, man was I wrong. It was a reliability nightmare so I sold it and put the money towards the Egnater and never looked back. Because of that I never recommend anything in the Hot Rod series including the Blues Deluxe and Blues Jr. Come on EL84's in a Fender amp? I may sell the Twin too. A good friend of mine is really interested in it. I'd like to see it go to a good home. :D

thats thats part of my problem, i dont know tubes.
most of my stuff is solid state except a couple.
the couple were used for bigger spots and i relied mostly on my solids.
now im in a situation as to where i want tube, but smaller sized amps.
i hope this wont be a learning experience in the financial way.

Funny thing is, when I use my Rebel, it cuts better than my HRDlx ever did and has no problem keeping up with a 60 watt DeVille when I run my second cabinet. I can keep up with most 50-60 watt amps. It can keep up with 75-100 watt solid state amps with no problem. It's not about watts, it's about efficiency.

Absolutely!

My 2 x 12 Princeton piggyback conversion (aka the "Dual Porch Weasel") is the same way, Supro. I set in with some guys occasionally and the other guitarist plays a SRRI. My 12 watts feeding a pair of JBL K120s feels right at home and has no difficulty cutting through the mix.

just got finished with some one on one time with a NOS js.
i really like this amp.
very warm but not to bassy.
the notes rang crisp on my 50th ann. strat
i ran my custom jackson, and my home built job
through for a looksee. all 3 did very well, 2 better than i expected.
did a littl emaster volume work and the amp has
some grit, which is what my strat is looking for.
i think the amp is a good deal at $500
down the road im gonna look more into the egnator 20.
im pretty impressed with that amp as well.
for its size and somewhat funny looks, its easy
to overlook that jewel if your not careful.
i know i did.
