Any amp can be a Blues amp. It doesn't need to say Blues in the name either. I use my SF Champ, Egnater Rebel 20. No matter what amp I use, I still play the Blues. In the past I used a Silvertone Twin 12 1484, Danelectro DM 10, various Valcos, a BF Vibrolux Reverb, Bandmaster even my Twin with a pedal. I also use a 3 watt Pignose too.

lol im aware of that,
thing is, some sound a lot better than others for
blues playing.
my carvin stacks that ive been using for the last
25yrs dont cut it. none of my
custom peavey stuff have the tone for it either.
so let me reask my question.

what are the top 5 small amps that have a
good solid blues tone.

59 Bassman RI, Deluxe Reverb, I seriously like my Egnater for Blues. No pedals required with my Rebel 20. The Peavey Delta Blues is a great swampy sounding amp. The Chicago Blues Box is great. SF Bandmasters are great too. Carr and Victoria are sweet amps too. The Deluxe 5e3 is awesome for Blues.

peavey sounds to "airy" to me any more. really trying to steer clear of them. been using them for yrs and wanting something different.
egnater i have seen, but not played as of yet.
looking forward to seeing more about them.
i hear they have a very warm tone.
who makes the blues box? ive not heard of them that i recall.
im pretty much looking for something a little different than what i have.
just getting ideas as to whats out there and what people are thinking
of them.

In the case of playing any particular style of music, the amp has very little to do with it, at least when compared to the player. If you can play the blues, you can play the blues. There is no "best" or "worst" blues amp.

That being said, you'd be remiss if you didn't consider the Fender Pro Junior.

Try an Egnater Rebel 20. I never looked back. It has both 6V6 and EL84 power tubes and you can mix them to any degree. It also has bright and tight switches as well as a watts dial that goes from 1-20 watts. It's not an attenuator though, it reduces the decibel level and gives you less headroom which in combination with the tube mix gives an outrageous tonal range that I've never seen in the 40+ years I've been playing. Egnater also has a new amp called the Tweaker, which is also a great sounding amp. My Rebel has been rock solid and it's built like a tank.

+1

Heck, I used to play a pretty fair rendition of "Dust My Broom" on my old Vox Super Beatle "back in the day".

Seriously though, playing the blues is more about the mindset and soul of the player than it is about gear.

That said, I don't think you'd go wrong with a 5F6-A Bassman or a 5E3 Deluxe.

I rarely ever use pedals, usually just a transparent boost. It's been really reliable too, zero problems in the 9 or 10 months I've owned it. I run 2 112 Egnater cabs loaded with Celestion Custom Elite 80's. It took a little while to break them in, but man it's a great sounding rig.
