Hi all

I have just picked up a Hot Rod Deluxe via e-bay and am now concerned about the hissing/radio static noise coming from it. It gets much worse on drive and really bad on more drive. Sounds ok on clean but still hissing a lot. It is about 5/6 years old and was made in the USA.

I have tried adjusting the mix between gain and master volume to no real effect. Can anyone give advice on likely causes and fixes? I play a Gretsch (G5125) with single coil DeArmond pick ups.

Appreciate any advice. Thanks Matt

Do you have any other tube amps to compare your HRDlx to? Tube amps inherently have a little background white noise even at idle, and it increases as you raise the volume and/or gain in a channel switching/master volume amp.

If the hiss is indeed louder than normal, then I would suggest new preamp tube(s) to replace the noisy one(s).

p.s. Locate the offending tube with your guitar not plugged into the amp so you're not confusing single coil hum and buzz with a noisy tube.

Matt, if your HRDlx is five or six years old, it was made in Mexico. I believe they stopped making them in the USA around 2002. It could actually be 8/10 years old or possibly older. The newer versions had PCB revisions to address some problems, but I'm not sure hiss was one of them.

It could be as simple as preamp tubes or bad filter caps. The preamp tubes would be the cheapest and easiest route. I'd stay away from Groove Tubes though. JJ's are great in that amp as are Mullard Be aware that tube amps hiss a little but if it's excessive try the preamp tubes first.
