I picked up a new amp yesterday, the Fender VM combo. Excellent clean tones but I am not sure what is going on with the Gain Channel. Here is the deal...

I have three guitars:
1. HW1 Strat with a DiMarzio Super Distortion in bridge
2. ESP 1000 with EMG 81 actives
3. MIM HSS stock Strat

When using guitars 1 and 2 in the bridge, Gain Control anywhere past 7, the amp sounds very fizzy and sort of a compressed. But it doesn't do this with the MIM HSS in bridge. All neck and middle pups are fine even with the gain on 10. I tried adjusting the pup heights on those tow troubled ones but it didn't make a difference, And these guitars sound fine on my Marshall head.

Could these pups too "hot" for this Gain Control? Also, when I add a TS808 to the amp with just a level boost, those guitars sound fine and the fizz is gone.

By "VM" I'm guessing Vintage Modified? These amps have IC chips before the tubes in the signal path. I'm thinking your pickups are powerful enough to overdrive these chips, giving you that nasty overdrive.

Thanks for that reply, and you make a great point. All my lower end (less powerful) pups dont get this fuzz type OD. Its wired how the TS808 turned on cleans this up though even when the Gain is on 10. Could the Level control on the TS808 be pushing the IC chip even harder so it sounds more clear?

The signal level on the TS808 out could be lower, or the overdrive itself could be masking it. Sending a transistor an already overdriven signal may straighten it up.
