Hi, recently I purchased a Hot Rod Deluxe used. It was bought back in 2000. Upon receivng it, I used it that same day at a rehearsal for my band. Everything was going fine, until all of a sudden the amp lost volume. It was very odd: everything was fine, and then all of a sudden the amp got really quiet. After a few moments, the volume came back. Now, the volume dropped significantly, this amp is usually very loud, but when this happened, I could raise it all the way to 12 without going deaf. My first instinct was to check the tubes. When using the tap test, none of them proved to be microphonic. the amp currently has a pair of Mesa Boogie 6L6s intalled, with glow a healthy orange and a slight blue when operating. The preamp has 2 fender/groovetube 12ax7s in the phase inverter and v2 spot, and a tung sol 12ax7 in v1. these also glow orange/yellow. I checked the fuse, and replaced it with one of the appropriate kind. I bought contact cleaner and cleaned out all the pots and jacks.

I still get the volume drop on ocassion. I have no idea why it's happening, what it could be. Has this ever happened to anyone else? any suggestions? I did call Fender, but since all I could do was describe the problem over the phone, there wasnt much they could do.

The first thing I would do is test the tubes; if you have tester or know somone who does. If not, you could try swapping the tubes out with new ones, if you have spares. If you don't have spares, now might be a good time to get a set of spares. Spares are always handy to have around with a tubes amp in case of a failure.

If this doesn't resolve your issue, it's time to go into the amp (not recommended if you are not very familiar with amps as they can maim or kill with the high voltages in there) or a trip to you local amp tech (recommended).

I have a Marshall that acted this way one time and it was a rectifier problem. I tested the tubes and found them OK, and the local amp shop replaced thre SS rectifier for me.

Good luck and let us know what you find out.

Hot Rod Deluxe problem solved. I hope will help you astrozombie

Low power problem;

I found my problem : not enought filaments voltage on V1, the first 12AX7

Those filaments are feed from 2 green wires comming from the long circuit board holding all tubes except V1.

Those wires are almost broken, the lamp glow, but not enought to work properly.

Now I have my power and no distortion

Another consideration when a drop in volume occurs. Check the output jack and 1/4 inch plug for oxidation as this can interfere with a complete signal going to the speaker. That is what happended to me. Clean the tip and the jack with a q-tip and good metal cleaner and be sure to clean off the cleaner as it can oxidize as well.
