I am looking to buy a new amp. I have been looking around since last week and checked out a few. I think the The Blues Deluxe is too loud since I live in an apartment. Any suggestions between the Egnater rebel 20 or the 57 CHAMP?

Thanks for the input.

Well if your looking for a 5 watt practice amp that costs about a grand then the 57 champ is right for you.Not that its a bad amp,but you wont be able to gig with it or jam with your friends.I have played the rebel 20.Its one fine amp and you can turn control the master volume down to .5 watt i think and yet gig with it.

I would seriously go with the Rebel 20 over the Champ. The 57 Champ is a great sounding amp, but no, you really can't gig with it, I know you can mic it, but it won't have much stage volume and will have no real headroom. It's also a one trick pony.

I'm still finding new tones from my Egnater Rebel 20 after owning it for over 9 months. It runs both 6V6 and EL84 power tubes and they can be blended to any degree or go completely 6V6 or EL84. It also has bright and tight switches to further enhance the already great tone stack it has. You can also dial it down to 1 watt. It's not an attenuator. 1 watt can still be quite loud if you crank it. What happens is you lose headroom and you get a decibel drop. It's all explained in the manual and Egnater's website. I have gotten some really great sounds at bedroom levels.

If you're dead set on either the Champ or the Rebel...I would suggest the Rebel 100%. The Champ is a one trick pony and if it will be your only amp, you'll get bored fast. I love Champs, I've played vintage ones and owned a boutique one (I only have a Champ 600 now) and they are a ton of fun, but they are limited - not loud enough to gig with, but too loud for apartment use because the Champ's sweet spot is when the volume is cranked, 5 watts from a tube amp is still LOUD. They're not good for anything else in my opinion.

Besides at $1000 the 57 Champ is way overpriced in the over-saturated marketplace of boutique Champ clones. If you're budget is $1000 you can even do better then the Rebel too. But I wouldn't know what to suggest since you give so little info besides that you live in an apartment. What kind of music do you play? Any specific features that you are looking for in an amp? Does it have to be a tube amp?

I own a Fender Deluxe and I love it. The reverb sounds amazing and it has the truest classic tube amp sound. I leaned to play on my Dad's old tube amp and the Fend Deluxe reminds me of that amp. Easy to change the sound. With a few EQ twists you can change from glass melting blues and country to smooth creamy jazz. It also has great overdrive, very classic rockish. If you love to play classic rock like I do, this amp may work for you.

You could probably find a new Fender Deluxe for a good deal online or maybe a used one online.

Good Luck

If you are looking for an Egnator.. check out the Rebel 30 which will give you more power if you ever decide to gig out or play with friends. Or if you want to go even bigger with more features.. check out the Renegade. If you really want something small for an apartment.. you could crack those down.. but will lose tone.. but I think if you live in an apartment.. it will be hard to get a real tube tone out of anything w/o pissing off the neighbors.. even a 5W or 1W.

I've been kind of looking for something similar but have a house.. so won't have neighbors barking at me.. but I am concerned about volume levels inside. I may be leaning towards the Renegade b/c of the extra features.

How about a little Vox AC4 4w-1w-0.25w all tube, loud enough for any apartment, only had it a week myself, was looking at blues junior amongst others, just to loud for home use IMO, also my first all tube amp so maybe not the best advice but just thought I'd give it a shout out, combo or head and speaker and you'ld prob get six or seven for the money you have to play with :) , good luck with your search

There are many amps in the 5 - 20 watt range. Me feeling is that 20 watts is way too big for apartment use.

Try as many amps as you can. Find the one that matches your tone. If your pick is too loud add a attenuator.

The Rebel 30 isn't that much louder than the 20. My understanding with the 30 is the tube mix dial must be at 12:00 to get the 30 watts. My 20 has a pretty big volume bump at 12:00 too. That's when all four powe tubes come into play. I have no problem at all gigging with the Rebel 20. It has plenty of volume to spare. In bigger venues I use a second 112 cabinet. My Rebel holds it's own with bandmates using 50 and 60 watt amps. It cuts way better than my HRDlx ever did.

This is great information. It would be nice to have a lighter platform and more module like the R20 or R30

If you are willing to try a "software" amp
Try one of the Line 6 amps or the Vox ValveTronix.
They sound good at any volume and are definitely not one-trick-ponies.

What is a software amp? Do you plug your electric guitar into some sort of sound card in your computer and then output the sound from your computer speaker system?

Sorry newbie and I have never heard of software amp before.

thanks

Basically it is a mini computer that is added to a solid state (non-tube) or hybrid amp that can mimic multiple amps/cabinets/effects all in one. Go to youtube and look-up Line 6 Spider or Vetta. The software on these amps is also upgradeable by plugging it into your computer via a usb cable.

Actually think of it more like taking an effects board and jamming it into a amp head.. an all in one kind of thing. These are versitile and usually cheaper than a quality tube amp.. but I have yet to hear one that can replace the tone of a valve amp. To each their own... I do actually use a Line 6 floor board into a powered speaker at the moment b/c it is small and versitile.. but it is missing the tube tone. Trade-offs... ya know.

Hope I didn't confuse you more.
