Hello! I been having some weird problems with my hot rod dlx...the problem is probably something super simple (like the tubes) so go easy on me...I am defiantly a newbie to tube amps..

Lately my amp has dropped in volume a lot, meaning I have to turn it up to 12 to even hear it. When I can hear it, it sounds very weirdly distorted and odd sounding. I did my research and from what I gathered it was the power amp tubes..So I dropped 70 bucks on some new power amp tubes at Guitar Center and put them in..........and nothing. It sounds exactly the same (actually less odd distortion) but there is a gigantic volume drop..

so, what I ask of you my friends, WHAT IS GOING ON!?!

Amp fading is often related to tube/s. Not necessarily your power tubes. Doesn't that amp use 2 6L6 power tubes.?? I would have said preamp tubes. Like your power tubes were turned up but your preamp was barely putting out, giving you that odd overdriven sound. In any case, pre-amp tubes are your next at home repair attempt. Look at it this way, you will have all new tubes. You can always use extra tubes. If you don't have luck there...look for Skip Simmons Amp Repair, in Nor Cal. Good Luck.

It could be a lot of stuff. First you should always check the bias if you changed your power tubes. It could be you preamp tubes as was mentioned above or just your phase inverter. Next, be sure both power tubes are glowing. If not, it could just be bad solder joints on the tube sockets.

Next, don't buy tubes at Guitar Center and don't use Groove Tubes. I don't know too many people who have good luck with them. They are overpriced hype and Fender owns them.

Go to Eurotubes, or Tube Depot etc. I highly recommend JJ's for you amp. At Eurotubes I only paid $62.50 for a whole retube kit. That's ALL the tubes.

I couldn't agree more about Groove Tubes. I have never had any better sound at all with GT. They are a hype. I learned the hard way. I bought some.

thanks guys...

Yeah I new I should have avoided groove tubes. They were extremely expensive. I just got fed up with not being able to play through my amp so I got a little impatient and just went to guitar center. Such a scam though, They only carried groove tubes and they have a no return policy on tubes. I'll check out that site for some pre amp tubes and a phase inverter. thanks guys for taking it easy on me. hahaha

tyler, it's all good. I was in your shoes with my own HRDlx. It was constantly in the shop for one thing or another. I sold it while I still had some warranty left on it. I was up front with the buyer when I sold it. I sold it with a fairly new set of JJ's and he loved the tone of the amp. He figured all the repairs that could be possibly be made were made. So now I'm thrilled with my Egnater and he's thrilled with the HRDlx. Go figure.
Let us know how you make out.

I have a friend Hot rod Deluxe to repair.

The amp play low volume . You must put vol knob at 5 to have the power you should normaly have at 3, and he give some distortion too.
It is an amp that he bought used and the amp never play loud . He did'nt test realy before buying.

I replace all the tubes and check bias on 6L6 . All are good.

So now I will check on the circuit.

I found a 100kohms open resistor on the Phase Inverter tube. I replace it, not better.

Always low power and small distortion

I found my problem : not enought filaments voltage on V1, the first 12AX7

Those filaments are feed from 2 green wires comming from the long circuit board holding all tubes except V1.

Those wires are almost broken, the lamp glow, but not enought to work properly.

Now I have my power and no distortion

I am haveing a similar problem with my HRD. There is a buzzing sound that can be triggered at the output jack of the amplifier. I took this in a couple months ago for the drop in volume and the tech stated there was a wrong tube in the pre amp and replaced it. It has worked fine up until last week when this buzzing like (bumble bees in a nest) started. The amp had volume for the last week but as of yesterday now after it warms up the buzzing starts and then the volume drops off. Any thoughts? Has there been an issue with the HRD pre amp, wiring etc?
Thanks,
Mike
