Want to get a new amp for my new Strat. Play Blues 90% of the time. Went to my local GC and got to play several. Really liked the Blues Deluxe reissue and the Blues Deville reissue (I could go either way). I really liked the tone on these two amps. I am worried about these being to much for playing in my house. I would say 70% of my playing is in my house (read: lower volumes), the rest of the time I play with some friends in a home type setting. We play loud, and are basically a bunch of older guys who are hacks (but hey we like our stuff, Holiday Inn lounge someday just maybe ;-) )) in a band type setting. I am am playing on a Peavy Vyper right now, but I really want a pure tube amp with no processors/tricks etc. My budget is around $1000.00. Would rather not go used. Any advice appreciated.

If you have enough space at home a deluxe reverb might be the ticket. Its 22 watts of tube power.I also know the Egnater rebel 20 goes from 20 watts down to 1 watt. Both are in your price range. The Blues deluxe and especially the deville are way too loud for most homes.Unless its the home of the deaf.

Deluxe Reverb re-issue.

Great tone, full-featured, portable and affordable, and you won't end up on a first-name basis with some amp tech 'cause your new channel-switching rig failed the "smoke test"......again.

The Blues Deluxe (I own one) is too loud for home use and the Deville is more so.

Many on this site are high on the DRRI. It's the right size @ 22 watts and sounds very good clean, but I don't care for the lack of a channel switching feature (to a drive channel). If you go for the DRRI, make sure you understand the features and try one out first.

Stay in the 20 to 30 watt (tube) range; think about whether or not you will use pedals or prefer not to; and if you play lead solos, decide if you want channel switching; how much overdrive/grit do you want?

Check out the Peavey Classic 30 and Delta Blues (both 30 watt all tube, w/ channel switching). Sound bytes on the Peavey website will give you an idea of their sound.

My drri has a drive channel. Its done by my stomp box and it sounds better than any drive channel fender has to offer.Drive channels are overrated in my opinion. They just dont sound very good IMO.

DRRI hands down. Friends don't let friend's drive the HRD series. My HRDlx spent way too much time with the tech.

I have a Blues Deluxe RI that I like very much. I use it in the house with no problems. It has 1 and 2 inputs with 6db less in 2. I use a fulldrive in front of it and use the volume control on it at times for more adjustment. I use a volume box in the effects loop sometimes very slightly. All you really need is the amp's volume and master volume and the guitar's volume to get reasonable sound levels. It leaves you the option to have all you need. No problems with it.

When/If the day comes that I accept the fact that I can't find all the features and tone in an amp without using any effects pedals, I'll probably want a DRRI. Until then, I'll stubornly continue the search. Then, I'll probably be bored to death! :D

Take a look at the Egnater Rebel 20. I play blues also and I find every tone I ever wanted with this amp and then some without pedals. It's built like a tank too. The build quality far surpasses anything in the Hot Rod or VM series. It's way more reliable than my HRDlx ever was and has killer tone from clean to tons of gain.

I'm saving up my pennies for this one.
I've heard and read so many good things about this amp it seems like no-brainer. Yes, I will test it out too but I need to save some $ first.

63supro...do you mind not having the reverb and extra channel that the 30W version has?

Thanks for all the reply's. I think I'm going to sit on it awhile. I definitely have to try every single one recommended. I'm definitely going with a lower wattage amp.
How does the clean tone of the rebel compare with the mentioned Fenders?

Don't miss it at all. A lot of my amps didn't have reverb. You can always pick up a reverb pedal. I might and run it in the loop if I feel I need it. The only time I miss it is if I playing in a "dead" room with lots of carpet and acoustic tile. That's not very often though. I use the guitars volume control or a transparent boost pedal that I made or I have a Marshall Blues Breaker pedal clone from BYOC that I built and modded to my liking.. The Rebel 30 is nice too, but I just preferred the voicing of the 20. At the time I bought mine, they only had the Rebel 30 combo. I wanted a head.

I tried the Egnater Tweaker, that's another fine amp with lots of tone tweaks. It's 15 watts and cathode biased so you don't have to worry about biasing the when you change tubes. It's a bit less expensive than the Rebel. I doesn't have the tube mix or watts control, but it's still a really fun amp.

There's a Tweaker combo too for under $600. I compared it to the Blues Jr and it sounded so much better and had way more tonal variations on tap. I still prefer the head, but that's just me.

I agree. I've always preferred pedals to channel switching amps; much easier to control the volume, tone, and grit.

To the OP:

I'm in the same situation as you; primarily a home player, but occassionally I jam with friends. I own a DRRI and I love it. It works great for me.

The DRRI goes for around $600 used.
