I like this demo of a new stock Champ, a new modded Champ, and an original '51 Champ. That '51 sounds sweet!

The modded 600 gets pretty pricey when you factor in the cost of the amp and almost total rebuild. You can get a tweed 5e3 kit for not much more or build a Champ clone with a bigger speaker for the same money or less and have a way better sounding amp. That 600 still sounds boxy. It's the tiny cabinet that kills it. All it really needs is a bigger cabinet with a bigger speaker. A 6" speaker really does this amp no justice at all. I like Fargen amps but I don't find the mods worth the money. To spend that much money modding a tiny one knob practice amp is just IMO silly.

I modded my champ 600 with new Jensen mod 6 speaker and tung-sol tubes and it was around 60 bucks - well worth the money - esp considering the 600 is only 149 bucks.

Who needs a 57 champ you ask, if you ever have played through one you would say you need one. It's the greatest tone EVER!!!

There is absolutely no comparison between the two, they are not even close - the 57 champ blows everything out of the water, except for maybe a 57 deluxe and/or a 57 twin.

You can build your own Champ clone cheap and it will sound every bit as good as the new 57 Champ RI.

Supro, can it be done cheap? Pricing stuff out, I haven't been able to match the price of some of those kits, or is that what you are referring to? i have built guitars, but a tube amp seems a bit daunting to me, the whole 'potential fatality' thing I guess. but the idea of building one seems more and more appealing to me all the time. especially with the price of vintage amps really skyrocketing,, there are a couple of amps I would like to clone.

I guess I'll assume you don't favor the 1k price?

I suppose I could....but why would I want to.....all it would be is a CLONE - COPY. And I don't think it would sound every bit as good.

Would your thought process hold true for everything then?? Is 2300 bucks to much for a custom shop strat? Would you suggest building a strat clone? And would it sound every bit as good.

If that's your thing, more power to ya. I have no desire to own a clone.

Do you think Fender uses magic parts? Marsh, Mission and Allen Amps to name a few make kits. If you build your own cabinet, it's around $300 for the board trannies and components.

It's not hard to build a 5f1 Champ or a 5e3 Tweed Deluxe that sounds every bit as good and even better than the reissue amps if you know how to mod them. I've heard them side by side in both the 5e3 and the 5f1 through many musicians that I know and perform with. A grand for a 5 watt one knob practice amp? Not out of my pocket. You can buy an original for the same money. The old amps sound the way they do because the component values have drifted over time.

The new amps don't sound exactly like the old ones because the components are new. I've tried a Deluxe reissue against an original and the reissue is a bit tighter and lacks the tonal quality of the old one. The clones are closer to the reissues than the old amps too. The baffle on the 57 Champ reissue I played through in NYC buzzed like a can of bees when it was turned up past half way. I'm I supposed to be impressed because it costs a grand and says Fender on it?
I wouldn't pay that for any one trick pony practice amp.

Would I pay $2300 for a custom shop Strat? No. I wouldn't pay $2300 for any CNC made bolt together guitar. There's a lot more choices around for the money. If a guitar plays well and sounds great, I don't care whose name is on the headstock. And yes I have played part o casters that played as well and sounded just as good and the bolts were in the same exact place as the original.
Blindfolded, I defy anyone to tell the difference.

I'm too old and been playing too long to think just because it has some brand name on it, it makes it special. Just to be clear I do own Fender gear as well as a bunch of other gear. I consider my gear tools to get a job done. I don't care whose name is on it.
