This question is about a statement in the VOX AC30 manual. Before you throw me out for talking Vox, I do own two Fender guitars and a Princeton RI.
:)

So here's the story: The AC30CC2 has a smoothing switch. The Owner's Manual says the Smoothing switch on 22uf sounds "open and loose" while 44uf sounds "tighter"

Anyone know how to explain "open and loose"?
How about "tighter"?
These are not musical terms I learned in school.

I can only go by my "Bright" and "Tight" switches on my Egnater Rebel. The Tight switch make the bass response more defined as opposed to less defined and I guess floppy or loose could be a way to describe it. Kind of like that type of tight that Funk players get I guess. It's pretty apparent on my Egnater. I play in a couple Blues bands so I like the looser bass response. The bright switch I only use with my Humbucker equipped guitars.

Loose and open= more of a blues type of distortion...fuzzy and warm...can even get muddy sounding, and notes are not as articulate but they sound big and fat-think vintage distortion-fuzz face ect.

tight=more of a metal distortion, where you can add a lot of gain and still hear each note, particularly in the bass response. Think the Marshall sound.

Another way to hear the differences, would be to switch between your neck and bridge pickups. The bridge is generally more tight and focused while the neck pu is more open and loose, if all other things are equal.

I like both depending on what I am playing. For soloing in the higher registers, I love open and loose, big fat notes. But when I get to the lower registers, I like the tone to tighten up and become more articulate.

When I play high gain metal type rythm, I like it tight and focused so you can hear each note in the faster parts, and the bass does not buzz my whole cab.

Bluesy stuff sounds good loose and open with less gain coming from the preamp

I hope this helps
